The Who I'm not sure about, don't really know what they did.

Stuff like this, though it's a cover:

My heart always races when ol' Pete gets going in the middle of the song.

I'm a big fan of Led Zep, but never really saw much in the Stones or Pink Floyd. The Who I'm not sure about, don't really know what they did.

You .. . You dont know what The Who did?! Get out!

And with all the talk of 60's bands, nobody has mentioned The Kinks? :(

...or The Move (vastly underrated imo)

The Who - Can't Explain

And what about this bad boy from the same gig:

Not a well known song, but flipping awesome.

I once read a review that said John Entwistle had the misfortune of being a good songwriter in a band with a great songwriter. I miss him a lot. I had tickets for their 2002 tour kickoff and wound up attending a memorial ceremony at the Vegas Hard Rock instead :(

My wife never let me name any of my kids Pete. Good thing I got rid of her.

Yep, he knocked out some goodies; My Wife and Boris The Spider are two obvious ones that spring to mind. I suppose you could say the same of Harrison in The Beatles.

I don't think any of the other sixties bands were in the same league as The Beatles except maybe The Stones who were also blessed with an awesome array of songwriting and performing talent. The Stones were fashion leaders in their own right and also had a major cultural impact on the times.

I would slot The Who in after them but not that far behind. Clearly a seminal band and surely 'My Generation' has to be THE song of 'rebel' youth?

Slightly off-putting to me though that they still chose to sing it in later years. I see no point in Townsend and Daltrey strutting around a stage at post 40 years old singing/playing the same old songs in the same old way, especially 'My Generation'... 'hope I die before I get old!' Yeah, right! :)

Oh they did Pinball Wizard! Right, well, erm, not by favourite ever song.
Dabutt the best thing about that video was the drummer's face right near the end :)

I do like The Beatles, but I like to get my socks rocked off, and hey always seem a little soft to me; The Stones or The Who could have blown your face off.

Someone needs to get ian_w a copy of Sell Out, Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's Next and Quadrophenia ASAP. Possibly the greatest 5-year run in musical history and there were a LOT of great albums being produced between 1967 and 1973.

The band's penultimate performance at Kilburn in 1977 has been digitally cleaned up and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in November. It will also include a bonus film of a 1969 Tommy gig. The concert is playing this weekend on most U.S. PBS (the closest we get to our own version of the BBC) stations, but it looks like my local channel has decided not to air it. :(

Apart from My Generation, probably most of their very well known tunes aren't really amongst their best, in my opinion. People might listen to pinball and think it a novelty, though of course it isn't at all in the context of Tommy, the album it comes from.

Id even throw in '.. . By Numbers' and stretch the golden run a little longer. The album they had out a year or two ago was surprisingly great as well, I thought.

Keith Moon was quite famous for looning about. I miss him a lot, too.

Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy is a good place to start imo

You would have had to see The Beatles BEFORE they made it big to hear them at their rocky best, but they never had the wall of sound amplification that rock bands had.

The Beatles as PERFORMERS when they made it big were essentially a boy band playing to teenage girls, despite the quality of their writing. That's why they quit touring after only a few short years - you couldn't hear the band over the teenies screams! The Beatles were at their best as a RECORDING band from 1965/66 to 1970. Their best performances were probably in Hamburg in 1959/60 BEFORE they made it.
