It's called a Jacob's Ladder (at least that the name it's given in a little instructional book of simple toys to make). I made a few when I was a kid.

I remember getting The Stage magazine once or twice in the 90's & there was always an ad in the classifieds for a joke writing service, But I can't remember the name of the guy, I wish I could.

I sent off for his promo gag leaflet and remember being a little bit underwhelmed.
But that was in my pre BCG days so I may not have really understood the humour that well.

It's a long shot, but maybe he has a website these days, who was that guy?

Unfortunately only one Gag has stuck in my Memory, I think it was in the topical/political section of the leaflet.
