Bit more in it than that... but that's the biggest reason I suppose, not a cold war buff unfortunatly.

Well of course there was.
But Cruise put a constant pressure on the USSR. As long as it was on the UK, Germany and in the sea, and on Stealth Bombers. It meant that the West could destroy 90% of Russian nukes with out warning.
With out US involvement USSR would have rolled over Western Europe in the 50s.

It could have been ugly. The Cold War sucked, but at least all parties involved remembered the Golden Rule of the Nuclear Age: The U.S. and Russia/USSR shall not engage in all-out warfare. Nobody wins and everybody loses.
