INT.OFFICE.DAY

JOHN IS SENDING AN EMAIL TO THE NEW GAY AUSTRALIAN GUY BRIAN IN ACCOUNTS

JOHN: (TYPE'S)
Gday Brian can you send the latest invoices for the Nobel account pronto

BRIAN: (TYPE'S)
Don't talk to me like that

JOHN TURNS TO HIS COLLEAGUE JERRY

JOHN:
JERRY that knew bloke BRIAN is touchy, he is offended I said ‘pronto' its obvious I was joking

JOHN (TYPE'S)
Gday Brian, sorry mate but you've definitely taken things the wrong way

Coming for a drink after work?

BRIAN GETS UP FROM HIS CHAIR AND STORMS OUT

JOHN IS LATER LOOKING THROUGH HIS SENT EMAILS ON THE SCREE IT SAYS 'GAY BRIAN'

JOHN:

I should pay more attendion to what spellcheck's doing

Another clever visual. Like the idea of confusing the spellcheck with g'day. Given Brian's only typing and doesn't actually say anything, unless it's a continuation from another sketch/scene, it's not going to be obvious to the audience that he is gay - or, most importantly, Australian. Though it should work even if his sexual orientation isn't in question - the point is he's offended at being called "Gay Brian"

In fact, why not make John the Australian - gives a better reason as to why he uses "G'day" to start his emails and he actually talks in the scene.

Also some might question why if they're in the same office they don't just talk to each other.

Nice idea about making John an aussie instead!!

Yeah I agree with Rob0. You don't make it clear that Brian is gay to the audience, but it doesn't make much of a difference anyway so drop that I would say.

Also yeah it would work better with John as the Aussie.

Good idea and good sketch though.

Does anyone think this can work as a short sketch? What's peoples opinion on Camera angles & how could I show it's the spell check changing it as some people will not be familiar with spell check??

answers on a postcard

With the changes suggested it could work as a standalone.

What do you mean by camera angles? If you're just talking about the script, you don't need to worry about them. You don't want to include them in a script at all. Don't tell the director how to do his job - you won't be thanked for it. If you're looking to direct it yourself, you should read some books on the subject. Maybe a director from this forum would be able to help you with the basics. Otherwise head for a forum more devoted to that side of things.

The spell check thing you're going to have to figure out on your own.

I can see it working as a standalone. I'd imagine most people have used/heard of a spell checker - the word "spellcheck" should make it obvious enough to the rest

Thanks

A friend and I are going to start filming some sketches ASAP so will be directing them ourselves. He knows a bit but doesn't think this sketch will work. I will look for some directing advice!!
