The LotR trilogy was basically overseen by one man with a passion for the books, this isn't the case with the Harry Potter movies. That was the point I was trying to make.
Even if they were lovingly crafted films you still can't get away from the fact that the acting is terrible as is most of the writing.

I have seen all the Potter films and loved every one. I've seen all the LOTRs and hated every minute. Bored to tears.
I can't imagine how yawnsome the books are.

Yes. The books progress and shift in style and tone, so different directors are required to realise the individuality of each installment. It would be stupid to have just the one.

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson can't act, they really struggle. Rupert Grint can just about play Ron, which makes it a shame that his character is so poorly written.

Can I just mention how unutterably SHITE the acting was in LOTR?
Elijah Wood is normally great, but he and the other one are aaaawful. Plus the script writing is laughable, so I don't know how you can use those same things against Potter films.

Wow Tim, that's impressive. I'm not a LOTR fan particularly, but I happened to find myself watching one when they came out anyway - very hard to avoid so you've done well (I saw the last LOTR, it was actually quite good - but it just wouldn't end!)

I've had nothing to do with the Potter franchise (books or films) but I've read and seen all the LOTR junk. Follies of youth.
As great as Coogan and Pegg are, I don't think either of them will ever have the box office clout of an Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller. Perhaps the only Brit comic actor who might one day be able to "open" a movie is Sasha Baron Cohen. And it'll be interesting to see if Edgar Wright can succeed at helming a big American film in the future.
