Channel 4's Comedy Lab Pilots

Out of the 6 pilots last year the majority were rubbish. I see there's 6 more in August. How do they select projects for this, is there a competition or do you need to be in the know?

There are open applications but mostly it's people who are 'in the know'. The vast majority are attached to a production company so it's best to go through them rather than Comedy Lab itself. For instance, BabyCow have one every year.

And Rough-Cut have about 3 this year, but now they say they don't take unsolicited material, well, that's what the man on the phone said to me. He didn't seem very exicted to be working there Rolling eyes

Yeah, you need production company backing so it's not 100% open.

They tend to be done by up-and-coming people already in the biz.

As it happens Baby Cow don't have one this year.

Our guides to the six shows are forming up at the link below. As you'll note, they're all pretty much written by those starring in the shows (all of whom, bar the kids, are recognisable names) so I wouldn't say this strand offers any particularly strong opportunities for aspiring writers.
