Current radio comedy... Page 8

Another excellent episode of Bleak Expectations last night. How can you not love a show with horse drawn pencils, opium juice, ghost jam and a lunch suit. Can't wait for next weeks series finale about a martian invasion.

Also worth looking out for is Jon Ronson On.... Last week was about bad news and featured Charlie Brooker, while last nights was about "Being Fancy". Worth a listen, although it's not strictly speaking a comedy.

Must admit, I was slightly disappointed with last nights Bleak Expectations. It was still the funniest thing on either radio or telly, but this final episode didn't seem to gel quite as well as the others. And while the martian storyline didn't exactly jump the shark, it did stand on the shark and peer over the edge of it. Can't wait for series three, though.

It was definitely very funny, but IMO it wasn't up to the high standard of the rest of the series.

Think this might have been mentioned elsewhere, but for all those interested and missed the first broadcast, on BBC4 tonight, there's a repeat showing of the TV recording of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, 10.30pm.

Recorded only a few weeks before Humphrey Lyttelton's death, it features some very funny stuff, including some classic examples of his trademark filth.

Anybody hear I've Never Seen Star Wars last night? Which slotted into the Bleak Expectations slot... Oh dear. As if Marcus Brigstocke hosting it wasn't bad enough, we also had to listen to Phil Jupitus eat foie gras and then later have an enema. Sick

At least Jon Ronson's excellent series is still going. Last night an interesting exploration of slowing down time, including Graham Linehan talking about how he nearly drowned because his shouts for help weren't very convincing.

Marcus Brigstocke is too off-putting a presence to even begin to ponder the mere idea of negotiating any programme with him in it.

They bloody love him at Radio 4 though, don't they!

I don't like him hosting, or on panel shows, but I think he works well in sitcoms (Think the Unthinkabkle) and sketch shows (The Museum of Everything). And Giles Wemmbley Hogg is passable.

I agree he does seem to be on the network endlessly, though.

I thangyou.

Perfect for this thread as usual, in my listening to stuff about six months after it was on, I'm currently listening to The Lost Weblog of Scrooby Trevithick which was on Radio 4. It's alright and has it's moment but it's a lot of Andy Parsons to take all at once. He's got all his Mock The Week mates in to play all the other parts, though Frankie Boyle is obviously very funny in all the parts he plays.

Also listened recently to Mark Watson's Spike's Lookalikes where Ardal O'Hanlon plays Ardal O'Hanlon. Usual Watson quality, with a few wry observations. Very entertaining it was too.

I never liked Lost Weblog very much, and I agree about there being too much Andy Parsons in it. He's a good pannelist, but I'm not sure he's got much else to recommend him.

As for Spike's Lookalike's, I thought it was a bit pedestrian. Disappointing as I like Watson's other work on radio.

The Lost Weblog of Scrooby Trevithick was far too weird for me. Didn't like it at all.

I haven't listened to I've Never Seen Star Wars yet, but my first thoughts are that it's odd that it's on the radio. It is a concept that would surely work better on the TV?!?

You think it's better to actually see Marcus Brigstocke and Phil Jupitus with tubes up their arses than just hear about it? :O

Started listening to the second series of On The Blog this morning. The first episode was really, *really* good. I mean, much better than the first series (and I enjoyed that a lot). It was one of those 'special' episodes that just strike a chord.

The second episode was as good as before, but not quite as good as that one.

Hut 33 - I managed to catch an episode on Radio 4 last night. The audience were laughing their collective heads off. Am I missing something? I don't know if the laughter is canned or a real audience but I could'nt get over the fact that they all seemed to know (Borg style) exactly when and how hard to laugh. Some of the jokes were ok, one or two were good but a lot of it was mediocre in my opinion. How they all kept up their constant laughing I'm not sure.

Def.
