Depending on the exact nature of the piece, there's also the Profumo Affair in 1963. Basically the whole state of our current political system stems from it.

I'll be supporting the launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter later this year as part of my job. LRO will image the Apollo site(s) and put an end to the nonsense once and for all. (And then a few years later the Chinese astronauts will do the same thing.)
