Stage directions

Obviously it's all about theatre rather than TV or film but still interesting, if only for this gem of a stage direction:

"He takes Carl by the arms and cuts off his hands... Carl tries to pick up his hands - he can't, he has no hands."

Laughing out loud

I feel sick.

I just love the fact that they had to clarify why he couldn't pick his hands up.

If you're, say, writing a short film script or TV sketch is it necessary to include detailed stage directions or should the writer leave that part for the director?

Only if it is absolutely vital to getting the joke. Otherwise leave the job of the director to the director, because it'll only annoy the person reading. It's not really the done thing.

That's why theatres employ Stagehands.

Did you have that photo at hand, Griff?
