OK - here we go.

You really got me - The Kinks (my favourite Kinks track)
In my life - the Beatles (my favourite Beatles track)
Private number - Judy Clay & William Bell (looked this up on e-music.com and found a 29 track Stax sampler - yippee!)
You keep me hanging on - Vanilla Fudge (found this on e-music as well - ten more recommendations off of this thread and I will have used up my 40 downloads for this month)
Afterglow - Small Faces (I may have to amend my list to include something from by the Small Faces, though I would probably go for The Universal, or maybe Rene...)

What about 10 singers/bands that people may not really be aware of that you would recommend.

The Inmates
Love
Rachel Sweet
Dory Previn
Be-Bop Deluxe
Wreckless Eric
Any Trouble
Doctors of Madness
Heavy Metal Kids
Laura Nyro

See above.

I love it when he nearly knocks himself out.

Robyn
Julian Cope / Teardrop Explodes

Ian McNabb / Icicle Works

I knew we'd be mates.

Teardrop Explodes album 'Kilimanjaro' is bloody awesome. Fantastic.

And I saw Ian McNabb live a few months ago, he was ace. Had to read all his lyrics out of a big red folder and he kept coughing and spluttering, but he was still magic.

Alistair Griffin!
And Ainsley Henderson.

I loved Ainsley! He was great. His version of You Really Got Me was brill.

He was ace!!

I liked his cover of 'She'.

(I love you for knowing who he was straight away)

Julian Cope / Teardrop Explodes

Johnathan Richman

Both of these are definitely worth checking out.

I interviewed Ian McNabb and Julian Cope for the Sheffield Uni newspaper in the 80s. McNabb was the nicest guy imaginable, humoured our stupid questions, and gave us beer. Cope was the scariest drugged-up motherflipper you can imagine.

Yeah, I thought McNabb was going to be grumpy, but he was really witty with the crowd and seemed to really enjoy what was a small, intimate gig.

:D I remember my dad bought Keep Me A Secret when it came out and we listened to it constantly for weeks.

Do you remember that guy Pete from Fame Academy? He just looked like he was trying to be a mix of Ainsley and Pete Doherty. And then he actually got addicted to crack, lole.
