Anyone else do Ashtanga yoga? It's mental, like an extreme sport. Love it.
Yoga
I do yoga. I started when I was at uni with a dance teacher who used Yoga, Pilates, and tai chi as warm ups. We had four hour lessons with an hour to warm up and another to cool down! I do it cause I found it was the best way to keep myself supple and fit for physical theatre and butoh dance.
Four-hour lessons?!?!?
Wow, that is pretty intense.
My sister used to do it, and it seemed to do her the world of good. It's just not my type of thing. If I was going to get back into the whole exercise thing, I'd probably jsut play 5-a-side footbal.
It was intense but it had to be. Same with physical theatre. I rememember every thursday and friday having physical theatre in the morning then lunch where I had to eat light as I had dance in the afternoon, then I would go home and have a very hot bath! It was mental but to be fair we got off lightly. Had I gone to a proper Drama or Dance school instead of University, I would have been looking at 12 hour days!
Good. Grief.
I used to take the Michael out of people that did yoga.
Then karma swung around and I found out I have a curved back (my nickname is now saddleback, lovely!) and was told to do yoga to help.
It's really good actually, I don't do all that hardcore stuff though.
You can break your back doing yoga if you're not careful. Don't do it.
I would ask that anyone thinking of doing yoga bear in mind it take a very long time to get beyond a beginners level (Even if you do it everyday, you are looking at years not months). I myself am self taught but at the same time I have years of experience due to dance and theatre training so I know what my body limits are. Therefore I would recommend you start off with a teacher if you are a total beginner. If you want to use DVD's, I recomend anything with Patrica Walden and Rodney Yee but again, it's easy to put strain on yourself so start with a teacher.
Oooh and Simon, have you looked at http://www.yogatoday.com/ ? They do a free show everyday.
