In the 1990s, people must have thought you were a time traveller.

How important does the panel feel is 'empathy' in the writer's toolbox?
I think it takes more than a 4 year old hair cut to get people wondering about time travel.
Damn!

Nonsense - being able to recognise the state of mind of another is vital for a winner. It's only when you can see that others are truely suffering that you know you must be ahead.
Quote: Griff @ July 5 2008, 12:18 PM BSTPete (or should I call you M Lewis ?), Seefacts etc, you guys carry on being as rude and disdainful as you like, if that's what gets you off. I've yet to see either of you post a helpful suggestion.
Seefacts posted a useful suggestion about my dialogue once. Admittedly, first of all, he simply said "Your dialogue is clunky", but when I asked him to point out what he meant - he did. And it's helped me a lot.
And Pete helped me sort out a messy ending to a sketch in Critique once.
I don't think having fights over what is and isn't rude is going to help anyone though. I always think "If someone's rude about my script, who cares?". I have this outlook as it's not the end of the world. There's more important things to worry.

No doubt, it seems to be full of loosers who are more interested in hugging each other than moving forward. My plan is to race ahead while they all massage each others egos and pat backs.
It's good to have a plan.
Guy Fawkes had a plan.
And we celebrate him every year to this day!
What a dude.

Why do Brits always deride people who think in terms of 'winners' and 'losers'.?
That's life, Griff. Sometimes people win and are successful, and sometimes they don't.
Me personally, I want to be successful and be a winner. Does that make me a bad person? No, it makes me someone with ambition and drive.
I believe the question was about Empathy?
Quote: Marc P @ July 5 2008, 3:39 PM BSTI believe the question was about Empathy?
Empathising with what aspect?
The feeling of starting out? The struggle with writing? The self doubt? The difficulty of getting into the industry?
What?
This was the question.

Well, it depends what the 'writer's tool box' is and what you're referring to.
Are you talking empathy with other writers, or empathy with characters?
