Where have the comedy films gone? Page 4

Hee.

Yeah, I forgot Jay and Silent Bob, that was good too.

Federal Wildlife Marshall Willenholly: The Orangutan; the most dangerous animal known to man . . .

Aw. Poor monkey.

I like watching the Morecambe and Wise films (The Intelligence Men, That Rivera Touch, The Magnificent Two and The Night Train to Murder). They were never as popular as the TV shows but I liked them. I read in the 'Eric Morecambe: Unseen' book that Eric said he thought the Night Train To Murder film was so bad he wanted it buried never to be seen again, wanting it screened during children's hour or the middle of the night when no-one would see it. Then again the film was made after their decision to leave the BBC.

Borat was a good film too.

Well more to the point, its production was the decision to leave the BBC. Only Thames could offer them movie opportunities.

Well, there's always the big-screen adaptation of 'The Thick Of It' coming up, i.e. 'In The Loop'...
I for one have high hopes for this, simply because Armando Iannucci's in charge. I just think he's too talented to screw-up a feature.

Ninety minutes (+) is always a struggle for comedy, which is why there are not many wonderful comedy films. The best comedy films occur when they're taking a different approach from sitcom humour, e.g. 'This Is Spinal Tap', 'Withnail & I' etc.

Even 'The Simpsons' writers/directors, with all their combined talents, didn't quite make the show work as a movie.

I thought 'The Cottage' was pretty funny (in a dark way), also 'In Bruges' (for the first half anyway). Not strictly comedy genre though. 'Superbad' is the funniest film I've seen in a while.

I have just watched 'In Bruges' and it is a very dark comedy but very good. Brendan Gleeson is one my favourite actors so I may be prejudiced. Colin Farrell was ok in it too.

:) Loved the scenes with Farrell and the dwarf/little person/whatever.

I just watched Withnail & I for the first time. Very funny.

Not in an 'Uncle Monty' way either.

Sorry Finck, I don't see the appeal.

In Bruges is wonderful! End of. The bits where the guy gets shot in the eye and almost all the exchanges between Brendan and Colin where Brendan is trying to convince Colin he's having a good time are priceless.

Agreed.

I think Withnail And I is genius.

I've enjoyed a fair few comedy films in recent years - Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine - but the one that really worked for me was Napoleon Dynamite which nearly killed me through laughing. I like Sideways too although that is a gentler more character-based humour (except where the girl smacks the guy with the motorbike helmet...). And I might be the only person who enjoyed A Cock And Bull Story which I thought was amazing.

Still hating the Pegg films though.
