Thatcher. The Iron Lady Page 3

Aw. I enjoyed both the anecdotal and wikepotal.

It sounds fun!

Just kidding, I'm sure it was a mahoosive pain in the arse.

I still fancy only going to work 3 days a week though.

She did have something to do with Section 28 I think. Which is not good.

Highly controversial bit about the lezzers and the gays.

Anybody want to hear about my life (I doubt it - but if you do) - I'm sure Aaron could give you a wiki link

Ahhhh. Restricting them from government or something. Thats not good. Are you sure that is not a rumour because I thought Heath was gay.

Anyhoo I know she used the word *Swamping* in regards to immigration & that she was begged not to say that word on TV and done it anyway. She tried to put a lid on it.

I'm so glad that my anecdotal evidence has been replaced by wiki - there is no need for real people anymore

Well, a totally pointless TRUFAX! anecdote to make up for it: my mum really hates candles now, purely because they were needed so constantly through the 70s. A subconscious link between candles and the near anarchy of power suddenly dropping out. Again. And again. And again.

Ohh!

That's why they did that on Seventies Supersize me!

Now I get it.

Well as you have said to me before, I am older than your parents. I have the same problem with candles.

This is so patently untrue I don't know where to start.

GCSEs didn't "open education up to millions". It's like your suggesting that millions of kids were "shut out" sitting outside the school gates and were never allowed in before GCSEs came along and rescued them. The same number of kids went to school before and after GCSEs, ie, all of them except the ones who chose to bunk off. GCSEs made no difference whatsoever as to whether the general population had access to education. The kids in 1985 got to sit exams called O Levels, the kids in 1986 got to sit exams called GCSEs.

The kids who didn't sit O levels just did other exams with different names, like CSEs, or no exams, in exactly the same way that there are kids nowadays who don't get any GCSEs, or get low grades.

And in what way were O Levels "outdated", apart from being a bit more demanding than their successors and not containing the miraculous element of "coursework"?

I was at school during the change over from O level to GCSE. I'm dyslexic and a system based on virtually nothing but memorisation, and coimpleting exams, I'd have failed, and never got to university. GCSE made it possible for different skills, and talents to compete.

I loath the elitism that the only exam that counts is the one sat in a school hall for 4 hours.

I thought Heath was gay.

He's not known to have ever had a sexual relationship with anyone. Some people came to the conclusion that as he had never married and didn't appear to have a mistress he must be gay. I personally feel this is unlikely. We would by now have long heard about relationships, with either sex, had there been any.

No, you're younger. Interesting though, very interesting.

People, go ask your parents what they think of candles!

... You're 50 or 51, right?
