The Munich agreement was all about keeping Britain out of the war but it was the British people that were appalled that we were sacrificing some of our allies that caused an uproar. When Hitler invaded Poland after giving agreements that he wouldn't then the surge of public opinion meant that Chamberlain's position was untenable. In came Churchill, got us to stand up to Hitler and declare war against them but nothing happened for a while (the phoney war). All through this period Hitler still did not believe Britain would fight him. When he invaded France, Belgium, Holland - the BEF fought a brilliant rearguard action to get to Dunkirk but Hitler told his troops not to carry on to the town. He wanted Britain to be able to retreat honourably and then he believed they would sue for peace.
