British Comedy Guide

Best animated features?

I saw Persepolis last night, fantastic black and white animation, and very moving, if a little longer than it needed to be.

Anyway it inspired me to do a list of my Top 10 animated features, only I struggled to limit it to 10, so I did a Top 20 instead:

Antz
Belleville Rendezvous
Chicken Run
The Emperor's New Groove
Ghost In The Shell
Grave of the Fireflies
The Iron Giant
James and the Giant Peach
The Jungle Book
The Lady and the Tramp
Mulan
Persepolis
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Shrek
Spirited Away
Steamboy
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Watership Down

What films would make others Top 10 (or 20) (or whatever if you are a real animation buff)?

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia and insert every other Disney classic here. I'm particularly partial to Robin Hood, the original Winnie the Pooh movie, Dumbo and the Lion King.
Non Disney classic animation that come to mind are Spirited Away and Les Triplettes de Belleville.
I have a thing though for stop motion I would have to throw in Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Wallis and Gromit and Street of Crocodiles (Brothers Quay film).
As for computer animation Toy Story has to be my #1. I remember walking into the theater to see it, walking out to the ticket booth and going right back in to watch it. I think I've saw it 3 times that day I was so in awe. I like just about anything Pixar does (except Bugs Life which was still good but the least I would say). Can't wait to see Wallie!

Isn't the Pooh Movie a seriess of shorts edited together? But I agree Disney's Pooh is quite loveable,a nd not as far from the spirit of the books as some would have us believe.

I like the animation in Tim Burton's films; it is Danny Elfman's music that does my head in.

I am afraid for some reason I have never really learnt to love Wallace and Gromit. I feel quite guilty about it.

The Toy Story films are for me the pick of the CGI, but Antz is the best film Woody Allen has made since Sleeper.

I don't know Street of Crocodiles. I shall have to check it out.

The first animated movie I ever saw was Jungle Book and still the best in my opinion. Especially excellent was the music. Gets my special Top Banana prize.

Toy Story
A Bugs Life
Toy Story 2
Monsters Inc
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Cars
Ratatouille

Pixar are in a class of their own in my opinion :)

In no particular order-
Spirited Away
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Toy Story
Howl's Moving Castle
Wallace and Gromit (The Wrong Trousers is my favourite of them.)
My Neighbour Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Antz

I'm sure I'll think of more in due course, but Studio Ghibli just surpasses all the others in my opinion.

In no particular order,

Toy Story
Finding Nemo
The Lion King
Spirited Away

Fritz the Cat

(No order).
Kiki's Delivery Service,
Porco Ross.
Howl's Moving Castle.
Spirited Away.
My Neighbor Totoro.
(I like most of the movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki but these are my favourites.)
Akira.
Ghost in The Shell 2: Innocence.
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

Also, cannot forget the legend that is Toy Story!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Toy Story was and is shite!

As Mr Potato would say "Have you been taking stupid pills this morning?!"

Not a big fan of CGI, but the Toy Story films were genuinely funny and crafted with a with a wit and an imagination which has enabled them to outlive the wow factor of a technology that has moved on.

The only other CGI animations I like are the original Shrek (though it has been much devalued by sequels), Antz, Finding Nemo and to a lesser extent Ice Age. What these all have in common is that they were funny for audiences of all ages. It all starts with the script.

The likes of Monsters Inc. and Bug's Life are aimed firmly at children, and for me much less interesting.

(I have not seen The incredibles, Cars or Happy Feet so I can't comment).

:)

I give a warm and generous round of applause in the general direction of Timbo.
