Oh, OK, Alan, thanks for your advice. Sorry, I was thinking Alan C was a different Alan and Jay was Alan's user name.

Np, I want a new machine now as well grrr
I have a HDD/DVD recorder made by LiteOn and it seems to work OK. I've been using it for about 2 years and I use it a LOT. I've already worn out one DVD burner in it. Fortunately, an off the shelf internal DVD rewriter from PC World plugs straight into it and works perfectly, so it only cost me £25 to repair. When the HDD goes, I'll try the same thing and see what happens.

Yes, I was complaining about mine. Then the sound stop working, turns out something happened to the scart plug, so I sent the audio/video through the err yellow, white and red leads (what do you call them?) anyway turns out to be a great picture and sound and now I'm happy.

Composite.
Ah, of course. I was thinking Component but I knew that was wrong.
It is my third Pioneer DVD player, which I bought last week, when after two years of abuse my previous player kicked the bucket. http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/45/64/222/DV-600AV-K/index.html
The HDMI definitely is a plus picture-wise.
I did consider buying a recorder (a Pioneer one, naturally), but they are still too expensive around here. Plus, what few programmes I record from TV, can be done on VHS (gasp!)
I have a Panasonic DVD Player with 1080i Upscalling attached via a HDMI to my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. The pictures good, yet I've not seen proper HD on it yet. Waiting for the FreeSat to bring of HD-HDD thingies first.
