Script Editors

I'm having a huge mental blank at the moment with an assignment question. I was hoping-desperately praying-that someone here would be kind enough to help me.

6. Briefly outline some of the opportunities available for script editing.

Please ... please ... could someone help me before I lose all of my hair? Everyone else can answer the question but me-which is making me feel rather stupid. I've managed to get up to assignment 7 without any dramas then a complete mental blank hit me.
Teary :$

Kate :)

What is the rest of the assignment?
if it's all about getting jobs in the media and this question is part of it then the answers will be....The opportunities lie in TV companies/Radio that do drama etc and deal with scripts. Script editors are necessary to hone scripts to the quality needed for airing

Thank you for your reply. :)

The assignment is part of my proofreading and editing diploma and while this seems as though it would be a straightforward question to everyone else, I failed it. :$

This is the only question involving script editing.

Kate :)

It's a bit of an odd one to answer out of context Kate. From an employment viewpoint there are opportunities for script editors in all broadcast narrative drama or comedy, so that includes film, television and radio. There isn't a comparable role really in Theatre.

The script editors primary function is to liase between the creative, i.e the writer, and the producer sides. He/she is the point of contact. A writer produces a first draft - the script editor collects notes from themself, from the producer from the exec producer, uncle Tom Cobley all and feeds that back to the writer to incorporate in a second draft.

So those opportunities would lie for TV within Production companies either the BBC or in the independent sector, likewise for radio or film. A script editor is usually a stepping stone omn the path to producing - or in some cases writing.

Not sure if any of that is what the question is asking mind.

Best of luck with the diploma!

Marc

The couple of script editors I know are using the position as a stepping-stone to a career in writing/producing/directing.

Thank you, Marc and Tim

I believe the question may be asking what job opportunities are there for script editors? Just say I was a script editor, where could I work?

This is my answer so far.

6. Briefly outline some of the opportunities available for script editing.

A script editor could work for the television and film industry. Some of the opportunities are movie scripts, television series, news and current affair programs, documentaries and children’s television scripts.

A script editor could also work for the radio broadcasting industry. Some of the opportunities are news scripts, advertising, community announcements, talk-back program scripts.

Can you see what I'm doing wrong with my answer? As you can tell, editing, especially script editing, really isn't my thing. I'm halfway through this diploma so need to finish. I have scraped through so far.

Kate :)

Somewhere in the writing section on this site I think there's an interview with a script editor. Could try reading that? If there's not one on here, would try the BBC's website next. Bound to be some information of use. Best of luck.

What you have put seems right to me Kate. Has someone told you otherwise?

I asked my script editor what it is he actually does and he hung up on me.

:D

So you're in development with that company now, yeah?

That'll teach you Tim, lol.

Ah, the edit button.

:)
