Pop Goes the Evil

A little something I like to work on to keep me ticking over between filming projects. Comments welcome...

Hi folks,

I'm resuscitating this for a genuine reason, not just for the sake of a bump.

The above video is part of my Naptime in the Quicktime series, episode 1 of which was one of the very first things I wrote that I took to the next stage of production. Pop Goes the Evil is part one of a two parter.

My feeling (and the feeling of my audience if the lack of comments here is anything to go by) is that the series has had its day. Thing is, the final chapter is written - in fact it exists as an audio recording.

My question to you is, is it worth me going to the trouble of sourcing and photoshopping the hundreds of images it takes to make the accompanying slideshow, or would I be better off cutting my losses and using those hours for something else?

On one hand it seems a shame to bail out on the penultimate episode. On the other it seems absurd to waste so much time on a project that has no real application (none of the images being cleared for copyright).

So I'm putting the question to you. Finish it or quit it? The choice is yours.

I think I was picking my nose in May it's the month I reserve for it.

This is excelent very reminesent of VL Smith, or Ferdinand De Bargos but not in a copying sort of way.

Surreal, clever funny and pleasant. I love the way you counterpoint surrealism with straight forward gags.

The Columbo line is a killer.

Frankly I'd expect to see this as a interstision on Adult Swim or something.

Where are you sending it?

n.b. it works without the images in my view

Wouldn't this be a happy compromise? Creating more time for other work.

I liked it but I'm very slow and found myself having to backtrack on what had just been said as was focusing on the pictures at 8 minutes I get easily dis....
Oh my hamsters up I wonder if she wants to play in her ball?

I like Naptime in the Quicklime. And the images do add a whole new dimension to each episode. But frankly, DB, I can't see the point of spending hours sourcing copyrighted images when your career is taking off in other more profitable directions.

Do it if you enjoy it and you think the finished product will be worthwhile, but if your heart isn't in it (i.e. if it is a chore) don't bother.

Loved this. Agree with sootyJ, it works well without the images.

Thanks for checking this out, guys.

Sootyj, I've not heard of VL Smith or Ferdinand De Bargos but I'll check them out. I think Naptime works with just the audio, it started out that way in fact, but the pictures allow for another layer of Comedy. The Columbo line, for instance, wouldn't work as well without the picture of him looking exasperated.

I'm still undecided about what to do with this. My heart says to give it up but I do so hate to see something unfinished. I cry every time Ming snatches that ring away at the end of Flash Gordon.

It's very good and worth sticking with, why not send it to Adult Swim?

It's good to go as it is in my inexpert view.

And never heard of Victor Lewis Smith, or the Staggering Tales of Ferdinand de Bargos?

Not heard of Victor Lewis Smith?!

He did 'The Gay Daleks'. Not literally of course.

Just do it.
Just do it because it is good and a thing worth making exist.

Agree that the audio stands well alone, but you're right, the slides do add another layer that gives it an extra edge. But given the copyright issues, why not just use it as is (and then if you should ever find yourself with the time/money, visualise the rest).

Love the background music, adds a great atmosphere. Especially the chilled out "waaaa guitar" in the first coupla minutes. Listened to it again without the pics and worked fine in its surreal way. Lovely scrunching noise with the golden ticket :)
