How can feedback be so different? Page 2

No offence.

First impressions DO count.

If he doesn't want my advice, I'm sure he'll say so.

I appreciate everyones help and advice. I'm just feeling a bit crap so all words of encouragment are welcome.

Def.

Meanwhile, please don't deride my achievements and then cover up them up with 'No offence' - it's makes you look a c**t.

It did rather.

Incidentally, it was about that sitcom script of mine that you read and seemed to quite enjoy! :)

Hi Dan,

I remember your script, and yes I really did enjoy it. Are you doing any further work on that or has it been overtaken by new projects?

Def.

Rejection is hard. The first rejection letter I got was awful. I felt like a newborn babe who'd just had its mother's tit slapped out of its mouth.

Or something.

Just keep at it. Even professional writers who've been "in the biz" for aeons get rejected all the time. It's part of the game and if you're to succeed, you have to shrug it off and plough on. Eventually good things will happen.

And don't forget, every new thing you write gets better in some way than the last. We're all learning.

We've got that to look forward to!

It'll probably get a rewrite at some stage and then we'll just record it ourselves to see the production process.

A lot of other stuff going on at the moment, so we're working on that first. Also trying to write stuff for The Sitcom Trials/Every1's A Critic (though I wish they'd make their minds up as to which it is!).

Try writing some 15-minute stage-based stuff for that. It's been surprisingly cathartic! ;)

Dan

The point is Def. There is no such thing really as a good rejection letter. If you are getting a letter it's usually cos they don;t want to progress with it. If they do they'll usually call you and get you in for a chat etc. The hardest thing is to be genuinely self critical before you send something in. So always, when the heat has settled and you have time for a more calm analysis, try and have a look at the criticisms and see if there is anything you can learn from them. They may not be right - but if there is something that they should have got but haven't - then it is possible you can address that in the next draft or the next project. Never simply bin everything - Nietsze says that what does not kill us makes us stronger - or something like that. So don;t let it kill you, let it be the fire in which the steel of your writing is forged.

This time next year we'll be millionaires.

:)

Thanks Marc. Don't worry, I was never going to bin my work. It's just the initial kick that hurts. I am going to revist the script at a later date for a 'calm analysis'. For now I'll just soldier on...

As a producer once told me: "Listen to the feedback, ignore anything you think is wrong, take everything else on board".

Dan

As a producer once told me: "You are rubber and they are glue."

At least he said he was a producer. He was about 8.

Wise words indeed.

Was he called Guybrush Threepwood?
