It'd still be a lot easier just to pretend none of it exists.
(Which is what I do most of the time, to be honest.)
I'm afraid where I live it is impossible to do.

Which is all very well for most people (even deities!), but when those in positions of power and influence do the same, it's worrying.
What makes me most uncomfortable about the situation in London is not that the BNP have a seat on the assembly, but the fact that the other parties, and the mayor, are refusing to have anything to do with him (Richard Barnbrook). This just shows utter contempt and disrespect to the electorate. I mean, what the f**k is this, Zimbabwe? If he has been democratically elected, he should be allowed to get on with the job. Almost 200,000 people give him their first or second mayoral preference, and 131,000 gave him their assembly vote. To disregard such a large proportion of the electorate troubles me far, FAR greater than the fact he's there. This is meant to be a democracy.
Quote: Griff @ May 20 2008, 12:01 PM BSTI'm not 100% convinced that the BNP are all about cleaning up graffiti and littering and that race is just a minor issue to them. It's going to be a frigging tragedy for topical sketch writing if that turns out to be true.
Might introduce some originality and variety though.
Yeah, but do the non-writer vast majority of the audience? It's just so tiring hearing the same thing week-in, week-out, no matter the party under attack. Is it any wonder British comedy is in the state it is with such lazy writing? Give me Two Pints any day of the week.
Quote: Griff @ May 20 2008, 12:17 PM BSTUmmm, I was only kidding about flogging the same old jokes week after week.
I hope so!
Quote: Griff @ May 20 2008, 12:17 PM BSTAnyway I think your wish for "Two Pints any day of the week" has been granted by BBC Three?
Has it? Hope so!

I like the idea that BNP voters are simple, honest folk, seduced by the cleaning up graffiti and bobbies on the beat policies, and the thought that immigrants are behind all the country's ills has never even entered their heads.
Quote: Aaron @ May 20 2008, 11:42 AM BSTThe thing campaigners fail time and time and time again to realise is that in terms of strategy and building support, the BNP are currently by far the cleverest political party. Whatever the core faithful and leaders beliefs may be, they're getting people to vote for them by actually addressing local issues, things which matter to local people on the 'front line'. I've seen black people saying they're going to vote BNP because the candidate has promised to tackle graffiti, anti-social behaviour, littering, etc. They've concentrated on those relatively small but ultimately day-to-day more obvious issues VERY wisely. Getting people on-side with sane, moderate policies.
That was actually a policy utilised effectively by the Nazi Party as well.
It is worrying that no one is dealing with the BNP supporters. I find the core of their beliefs fundamentally abhorrent, but their electoral success is symptomatic of the feelings that many people in the country have and mainstream politics should be doing more to tackle these problems. Either by dealing with these problems or by educating an electorate prepared to vote for the BNP.
Any debate about immigration is often hijacked by extremists on both sides - those who are truly racist and those who believe everyone talking about immigration is racist. We need some clear maturity from our politicians, but having seen the way they act in the commons I believe maturity is beyond them.

Precisely.
I firmly believe that the latter are far more dangerous than the former. To stifle debate is a quicker route to greater disaster than foolish opinions are.

The present mainstream "BNP OUT! NO RACISM!" rhetoric fails to address any of those concerns, and thus BNP support will only grow. How do you think they got a seat on the London Assembly? They came fifth place in the London mayoral election for f**k sake. It's not through demanding that darkies be shot at dawn.
Best time to shoot darkies is at dawn though, I tried to shoot some in the middle of the night and it was a complete disaster.
And I'm not racist as I despise all colours and creeds equally.

The conditional-AND operator '&&' performs a logical-AND of its bool operands, but only evaluates its second operand if necessary.
