The post about German listening tapes, or the one about French in a girls' school? The latter was bad due to Aaron "loving" the French oh so much

*continues shaking fist*

I was being sarcastic! Honest!

Germanic languages which are invariably harsh on the ear.

Invariably? Tosh and piffle! What about English?

I was going to ask about that, but though I might be wrong about English's origins.

No, you were correct; English is a Germanic language. As are the Scandinavian languages; Danish, Swedish, etc. Germanic languages are the best. :)

You have too much Google time on your hands.

All the Germanic languages were once upon a time almost identical. And they all came from Indo-European, which also had a lot in common with Sanscrit. Evidence seems to point to there being, at one point in time, only 1 universal language.

Googling's easy in a superior browser and with superior browsing habits such as mine. Cool

English is a half-breed of languages and it has distinctive roots in all languages. Because we've been colonised by the Romans we have Latin roots, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings gave us more Germanic sounds and 1066 introduced more Latin style words. These all influenced the original tongue of our homeland which was Celtic, which sounds more Germanic.

Any of that may be wrong - that's a just basic guess at the origins of the English language really.

I don't know if English sounds nice or it doesn't. I can't judge it aesthetically as I understand it, I know Latin languages sound nice regardless of what is being said and Germanic languages sound harsh on the ear. But that may be related to accent rather than language structure.

In summation: I don't really know, I just like the French accent.

Edit: Whilst I was typing you finished the discussion and proved me wrong. Oh well.

Which is unsurprising, as at one time people wouldn't have lived far enough apart to develop alternate languages.

That's a really good point!
Damn, that could've fitted nicely into my essay!! :(

I hate thinking of things afterwards! Today it's foreshadowing in Chapter 8 from the English exam! >_<
