The Wire Page 6

Yeah, that's why I try to watch everything On Demand, if possible. Life on Mars was butchered.

The first three episodes were edited down to two. They left in all the sex and took out all the politics.

I did not bother with it after the BBC butchered the first three episodes to dumb them down for British audiences.

And that is what worries me, the thought of the Beeb having any editorial input into HBO productions. Can you imagine, for instance, a commissioning meeting on The Wire: "We love the concept, but isn't the portrayal of the, er, non-white community a little too negative? And we are not sure British audiences have heard of Baltimore, could we move it Los Angeles? Oh, and could McNulty be a struggling single mum played by Carole Quentin?"

That reminds me of an episode of the Ross Kemp show Ultimate Force, from a few years back. It was the only time I've ever watched it, and Kemp and his men were going after a gang who were all black, except for one member, who was white. I think the gang had hijacked a double decker bus, and as Kemp and the others were about to storm it with their guns, their superior stopped them and asked them if any of them had a racist motive for wanting to do it! How Politically Correct can you get?! The gang were holding the passengers at gunpoint, and all this bloke cared about was whether any of his men were racist! If they'd all said they were a bit racist, what would he have done - sent them home and left the passengers to die? Then, when they did storm the bus, Ross Kemp was shown grabbing one of the gang's head and twisting it, making his neck snap. Who's neck was it? The white gang member of course - just to be on the safe side.
