David Bowie Fans Page 9

This is truly horrible, nasty arrangements and poor 'impersonations' (for the large part), almost disrespectfully poor in places, I felt.

I didn't watch

But I caught about a minute of Marc almond doing Life On Mars

Truly truly dreadful!

For anyone familiar with the video clip of the Bowie/Bing Crosby duet Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy, this imitation by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly is remarkable for its closeness to the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJBFD-Wvc7U

I watched, or should that be stood about a minute of this and wondered why???

Utterly pointless.

All this week, R4's Book of the Week, Paul Morley on Bowie -

I didn't even bother looking because Will Ferrell is pointless.

Iggy does David:

All rather confusing really? Well, allow me to elucidate. Bowie was not a massive fan of Bing. Bowie's mother was a huge fan of Bing, which is why Bowie agreed to appear on Bing's Christmas special (and also to promote his new single Heroes, which segues oddly from Bing giving Twiggy a pep talk on writing about "love and loneliness"). Things were tense on set. Bowie had arrived in makeup and a mink coat (and was wearing an earring). He then refused to sing Little Drummer Boy, so the Peace on Earth meld was hastily written and rehearsed.

The mostly-reverent recreation by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly may seem as pointless as the 1998 remake of Psycho, but the point is to show the undercurrent of tension twixt Bowie and Bing -- despite which, they sang beautifully together. Ferrell and Reilly do this surprisingly well.

Hope this clears things up.

For a chap who uses Hercules Grytpype-Thynne as his handle and avatar, you seem oddly averse to pointlessness. Such nonsense can provide alleviation from banality -- it ought not inspire tedium.

There have been plenty of duff Bowie "tributes" of late. One of the worst is by Michael Stipe. As an antidote, try some of the better Bowie covers done prior to his death. Such as Boy George singing Starman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbYuwkCX9z8 And Kiwi songster Neil Finn(Crowded House) doing Moonage Daydream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYU1fUDKeqs
