If you will indulge me on the occasion of my 1000th posting, I'd be interested in views on this short film script I knocked up a while back. It's a bit more than I'd usually post, but this way you get the whole thing - less than 10 mins worth so hopefully not toooooo long.
It's a bit dark, and it would have to be animated, as you'll soon discover. I'm quite proud of some of the dialogue.
EDIT: As mentioned later in the thread, it's meant to be darkly comic/macabre/poignant, but not funny-funny. I should have mentioned that up here before.
"ACT OF DOG"
CAPTION: EVERY DOG DEPENDS ON HIS MASTER FOR FOOD
INT. - BOB'S KITCHEN - DAY
REX, a small Jack Russell, is alone in the kitchen of a terraced urban house awaiting the return of his master BOB. REX hears BOB approaching and begins to jump excitedly as the door opens. BOB, fat and forties, stumbles in and collapses in apparent agony in the doorway leading to the kitchen floor, spilling out tins from a supermarket carrier bag bulging to the brim with dog food.
BOB
I'm going the same way old chum...not much time left...if I can just...help...you...
BOB drags himself up to the kitchen table and attempts to open a tin of dog food as REX darts around nervously, yelping.
BOB (CONT'D)
You must...have...food.
BOB falls to the ground, sending a half-opened tin of dog food spinning across the kitchen floor. It comes to rest by a bright bowl with the name "Rex" prominently displayed. REX's eyes dart frantically back and forth between the food and his stricken master. He dashes to BOB's side and continues to yelp and bark as he circles the body. His barks become a whimper as he realises that BOB is dead. REX sits forlorn, looking sadly at BOB's motionless body.
INT. - BOB'S KITCHEN - DUSK
Apologetically, REX slips away from BOB's side to the food bowl and bites away at the small amount of food visible from the half-opened tin.
Unsuccessful, REX moves to the carrier bag which is still lying on the floor. REX gnaws at the unopened tins in escalating frustration and eventually gives up. He returns to BOB's side, rests his head on his master, and falls asleep.
INT. - BOB'S KITCHEN - DAY
REX awakes and briefly attempts to waken BOB, but to no avail. REX scans around the kitchen at the scattered unopened tins of food. A shaft of light through the open kitchen door points REX to the world outside.
EXT. - THE CITY - DAY
REX walks slowly and apprehensively away from BOB's house. There is an eerie quiet as he steps into the traffic-free streets. As REX walks towards a parade of shops he becomes aware of several other DOGS wandering the townscape, some alone and some in packs. In the distance there is a commotion outside a shop, and all the DOGS run in its direction, barking and yelping.
EXT. - THE BUTCHER'S SHOP - DAY
We see the sign "BUTCHER" above the shop window. In the window are two hefty, growling bulldogs - the BUTCHER'S DOGS. They bark out angrily at the crowd of dogs that has now arrived at the shop. As REX arrives we see from his P.O.V. that the BUTCHER'S DOGS appear to be guarding a side of meat, wrapped in newspaper. There is no sign of the butcher.
BUTCHER'S DOG #1
(angrily, warning others away)
Rrrrrrrruffffff! Grrrrruff! Ruff!
BUTCHER'S DOG #2
(nodding and looking to his partner)
Ruff!
A CHIHUAHUA and a DACHSHUND break free from the crowd and sneak their way into the butcher's shop. While the BUTCHER'S DOGS are warning away the crowd, the CHIHUAHUA steals in behind them and tugs the side of meat away, slowly. Seeing his friend struggle, the DACHSHUND begins to help, but this draws the attention of the BUTCHER'S DOGS. The pair of sneakthiefs dash out of the shop through the excited crowd, hanging on grimly to their prize, but pursued by the angry BUTCHER'S DOGS. The thieves drop the meat in the centre of the town square. Quickly the crowd arrives and encircles them. There is a stand off. No dog moves. On one side, the BUTCHER'S DOGS. On the other, the CHIHUAHUA and the DACHSHUND. The crowd looks on in tense anticipation.
BUTCHER'S DOG #1
(angrily)
Rrruffff! Woof woof woof!
BUTCHER'S DOG #2
(supportively)
Ruff!
CHIHUAUHA
(defensively)
Woof woof! Bow wow woof, woof woof?
DACHSHUND
(agitated)
Woof! Woof!
BUTCHER'S DOG #1
Grrrrr...
The four dogs are poised to spring towards the meat in a battle that only the BUTCHER'S DOGS could win. But just as we see them ready to pounce, their attention is taken by the distinguished elderly voice of a GREAT DANE, speaking in deep, sombre Churchillian tones.
GREAT DANE (O.S)
Woo-oof.
The would-be opponents turn with us to see the GREAT DANE, standing proudly. He has just arrived at the centre of the crowd, in front of REX, and all seem to be in awe of him.
GREAT DANE
Woof... woof woof woof... woof woof.
Some DOGS in the crowd begin to nod to each other.
GREAT DANE (CONT'D)
Woof! Woof woof?
The GREAT DANE raises an eye, and looks towards the BUTCHER'S DOGS, the CHIHUAHUA and the DACHSHUND. The four in turn look a little sheepish, until the FIRST BULLDOG speaks.
BUTCHER'S DOG #1
Woof woof?
GREAT DANE
(looking straight into BUTCHER’S DOG’s eyes)
Woof.
The BUTCHER'S DOG nods, sadly. The GREAT DANE beckons forward a FEMALE LABRADOR from the crowd, followed by her litter of several PUPPIES. Shyly, the LABRADOR approaches the centre of the crowd.
GREAT DANE (CONT'D)
(to the LABRADOR, intimately)
Woof woof woof. Woof.
The LABRADOR looks hesitant.
GREAT DANE (CONT'D)
(gesturing to the meat with his head)
Woof.
The LABRADOR walks towards the meat, with the PUPPIES on her trail. As she looks at the package, the CROWD OF DOGS begins to disperse. REX trudges off with a group of TERRIERS, yapping as he goes, apparently trying to find out what's going on. The BUTCHER'S DOGS stare for a while at the LABRADOR and then the meat before turning back home to the shop. With the LABRADOR and her PUPPIES left alone, the LABRADOR tears off the newspaper with her teeth. As the family of dogs begins to tuck into the meat - at first nervously, then with relish - the newspaper pages are blown away across the city. We close in on a front page headline as it settles against a wall:
"DEATHLY PLAGUE SPREADS - ONLY DOGS IMMUNE"
The paper blows away again as we pan out to the desolate scene of the city, and for the first time we see the full extent of emptiness in the streets - save for the roaming dogs seeking food.
EXT. - FOOD EXPRESS - DAY
REX is with three TERRIERS outside Food Express store. The dogs are looking up longingly at a huge billboard advertising dog food. The shop itself offers no hope of food, as the security grille has been pulled down and locked tight. The gaps in the grille offer the dogs a tantalisingly glimpse of row upon row of food. Suddenly, a phone can be heard. The DOGS realise the sound is coming from the open window of a first-floor flat in an alleyway to the side of the store. A fire escape offers them a route up to the flat's door. The TERRIERS scamper ahead, with REX in their wake. The BIGGEST TERRIER nudges at the door, and to the surprise of all, it swings open.
INT. - THE FLAT - DAY
The phone - old-fashioned with receiver and cord - is still ringing, resting on a coffee table. The flat is tidy, but there is no sign of life. The DOGS make for the phone: it offers them a sign of human life - maybe food? REX tips the phone over to dislodge the receiver, and all four DOGS bark frantically into the handset. We hear the TELEPHONE VOICE as the DOGS continue to bark:
TELEPHONE VOICE (O.S)
(enthusiastically)
Congratulations! It looks like this might be your lucky day! Teleprizes have selected your phone number from those in the area, and you have already won a prize! It could be a luxury food hamper; it could be a holiday worth £500; it could be £1000 in cash; or it could even be our star prize of a brand new car! All you have to do...
The DOGS’ barking becomes less and less enthusiastic as they realise the voice is not responding to them.
TELEPHONE VOICE (0.S. CONT'D)
...is ring our prize claim line number to receive your unique code and instructions on how to claim your prize. Just think, within weeks you could be driving around...
Despondent, the DOGS slip away from the receiver, and their barks offer us a sad accompaniment to the sales voice on the phone:
TELEPHONE VOICE (O.S. CONT'D)
...in a brand new Rover! I'll give you a few seconds to get a pen and paper so that you can jot down that all important prize number. Don't forget that the prizes include...
The DOGS give up, and after a quick, fruitless look around the flat for food, they lie down wearily on the floor. The phone lets out a continuous tone.
EXT. - THE CITY - NIGHT
REX is with the TERRIERS in the middle of the city. A milky moon lights up the sky. The DOGS, and other packs nearby, are helpless, tired and hungry. One lets out a howl into the night sky. A second joins in. Then one of the TERRIERS. Then REX. Soon there is a cacophony of HOWLING DOGS, as we pull back to the full cityscape.
EXT. - THE CITY - DAY
A glorious early morning sun beats down on the city. REX and the TERRIERS look ill, with heavy-lidded eyes and tired, loping gaits. A POODLE approaches.
POODLE
Woof! Woof! Woof woof woof!
TERRIER #1
(wearily)
Woof?
POODLE
Woof.
The POODLE then adopts the distinctive pose of the GREAT DANE.
POODLE (CONT'D)
(impersonating the GREAT DANE’s voice)
Woo-oof!
The TERRIERS and REX nod, as though they understand. The POODLE moves on and conveys the information to the next pack of DOGS.
EXT. - THE CITY - DAY
REX and the TERRIERS make their way towards the town square, where all the DOGS are gathering. At the centre, the GREAT DANE is sitting down, waiting for his audience to arrive. Eventually he stands up, proud and tall. As he does so a hush descends on the CROWD.
GREAT DANE
Woo-oof!
The DOGS are hanging on his every word, but they look sad, as though they know what is coming.
GREAT DANE (CONT’D)
Woof. Woof woof, woof woof, woof. Woof.
Some of the DOGS in the audience begin nodding sadly to each other.
GREAT DANE (CONT’D)
(looking towards the butcher’s shop)
Woo-oof. Woof-woof. Woof.
The two BUTCHER'S DOGS glance to each other, and begin to walk back to the shop. In the distance we see them enter the shop. Through a window we see them arrive upstairs in the bedroom. We hear them howl out in distress, but soon the howls are replaced by the sound of them noisily chomping on some meat.
GREAT DANE (CONT’D)
(surveying the crowd)
Woof.
Upon this instruction, the crowd of DOGS turns around, and each dog begins making its way back home. REX exchanges a quick woof with the TERRIERS, and sets off to Bob’s house.
INT. - BOB’S KITCHEN - DAY
REX half-heartedly toys with an unopened can of dog food, before settling down to look sadly upon BOB’s body. He begins to think of the good times they had.
FLASHBACK:
EXT. - THE PARK - DAY
BEGIN MONTAGE
1: BOB and REX have just arrived at the park. BOB lets REX off his lead, and throws a ball into the distance for REX to fetch. REX dashes after it with great excitement.
2: REX runs into a pond and back out. He shakes himself all over BOB.
BOB
(laughing)
You little scamp!
3: BOB takes REX into the trees.
BOB
I’ve got a little treat for you here boy.
BOB reaches into a bag and pulls out a large bone. He hurls it away.
BOB (CONT’D)
Fetch!
REX goes to the bone. We focus on REX’s face, bone in mouth.
END MONTAGE.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - BOB’S KITCHEN - DAY
REX’s face in close up, bone in mouth. He is chomping away, sadly. We pan out to see the whole kitchen. BOB’s left sleeve is empty.
