Was it easier in the old days? Page 2

But how did you know about him in the first place to post him the stuff ??

Well, I wrote to him - but!

But!

Everyone is freelance now, so it's really hard to track people down.

20 years ago the producers you see on the credits, when producing BBC stuff, could be contacted at the BBC. Now they have a skeleton staff of a few producers.

20 years ago producers were easier to get hold of, and that's a fact.

With respect, how would you know how easy or hard it was to get hold of producers 20 years ago, seeing as you were about 2 years old at the time?

Right.

And I wasn't born during the Second World War either but I still know who won it.

As you've got a chip on your shoulder, so I'm going to stop talking.

I haven't read all the thread so apologies if someone else has said this.

I think it was easier to get your foot in the door in the old days, and be given time and opportunity to hone your skills

Having said that, there are lots more opportunities to show off your ability nowadays - many more TV channels and internet, for example.

But, but, but (big buts) and here is the crux: there are a squillion more people nowadays who think they have a career option in writing/media/showbiz/performing than there were even 30 years ago. So there is a real soupy mess of stuff out there and it's hard to get noticed against the rest.

I think the nett effect is it's harder now than it was then (whenever "then" was).

I do get a bit aggravated when I look at the difference in the world now and the one I grew up in, and then see someone telling me that aspiring writers had it much easier in my day.

Well, where's our Weekending, Not the Nine O'Clock News? Smith & Jones? The shows that you could realistically get material on?

John Sullivan wrote straight to the comedy heads at the BBC telling them he could do better than what they were currently producing. Would that work now? No!

The internet has made things easier, but the people are harder to find and are less receptive than they were.

Rant deleted.

Bye rant.

Oh, I quite liked that rant.

So did I.

Y'know Griff, it is possible to delete a post completely? There's a little delete checkbox on the edit page. :)
