The best piece of casting in a sitcom?

I have recently been introduced to 'Yes Minister' on dvd and I am blown away by the performance of Sir Humphrey Appleby as portrayed by Nigel Hawthorne. It got me thinking what a superb piece of casting for a sitcom it is and whether sometimes a certain person is destined to bring a certain part alive.

Another one is Michael Crawford in 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em'. I read somewhere that Michael was not the first choice for Frank Spencer but when he took the role he brought to it his own interpretation of mannerisms and vocals that ultimately turned a so-so idea into a classic character.

What other pieces of casting would you say are spot on?

Do you think that only certain actors are right for certain roles? If someone else apart from Craig Charles and Chris Barrie were cast as Lister and Rimmer would we still love their adventures as much? Could someone other than John Cleese have portrayed Basil any better?

Or is it all down to our familiarity with the sitcom and the actor. Phrases like 'no one could play that part except him/her' seem all to easily thrown around when, in actuality, we'd might feel just the same way about any actor we are used to seeing and enjoying in a particular role. Thoughts?

Def.

Yeah, that latter one. Very hard to assess because that's what we're used to! Sir Humphrey couldn't really have got more perfect though, no matter the actor.

Nice question Def.

I'm going to exclude writer-performers (because in a way it's easier for them to bring their own character to life) - so Fawlty and Brent are out, great performances though they are.

I think you'd be hard pushed to find better casting than Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier as Mainwaring and Wilson. The other pair that springs instantly to mind is Fulton Mackay and Brian Wilde as Mackay and Barrowclough in Porridge.

I love finding out who was up for certain parts but dropped out/got passed over at the last minute.

Does anyone know any? I only know film ones. TV people are a bit tight lipped about these kind of things.

Or indeed about Sylvester McCoy. ;)

Damnit, I heard of a really interesting re-casting just this weekend, but can't for the life of me remember what it was now! >_<

*tries to work out where he heard it*

Bless him.

Casting that Dreyfus guy in My Hero was inspired

I seem to remember from one of those Comedy Connections type things that they originally wanted Enn Reitel as Del Boy.

Hah! Can't say I've heard of him, but an article on the UKTV Gold website says...

It may now seem unthinkable that anyone else could have played the part, but David Jason was actually pretty low down on the list of potential Del Boys. A character actor by the name off Enn Reitel – who's worked on everything from The Bill to the Da Vinci Code movie – was considered, but he was busy making another series.

Jim Broadbent was then asked, but he was in a West End play at the time. It was only then that David Jason was approached (after producer Ray Butt caught a repeat of Open All Hours on telly one night).

Kris Marshall as Nick in My Family. That was when it was watchable for me. Also, Ricky G as Brent, especially as the producer didn't want him to be in it originally.

I think the whole cast of Royale Family is fantastic. That would be my favourite group.

And wasn't David Jason supposed to be in something else in Porridge?

I think EnnReitel was considered a brilliant character actor. Wasn't he the looney who kept Victor Meldrew prisoner on Christmas Day?

David Jason was also considered for the role of Lance Corporal Jones in Dad's Army.

Definetly Arthur Lowe in Dads Army. The greatest piece of comic acting of all time and will probably always will be. All the casting though in Dads Army was brilliant . More bits of great casting were: Bill Owen, Peter Sallis and Brian Wilde/Michael Bates in Last of the Summer Wine. Bates was also brilliantly cast as Rangi Ram in 'It Aint Half Hot Mum' Richard Wilson as Victor Meldrew was also brilliant. I'm going to stop now, I'll be here all night.
