Alan Partridge's Accent

This is just nitpicking, but here we go:

Alan Partridge was born in King's Lynn (Incidentally, that's where I was born). Then, he spent his childhood in Norwich.

That's what Wikipedia says and leads on to my query of:

Why doesn't he have a Norfolk accent?

On his Radio 4 shows, there was a hint of a Norfolk accent, but that had disappeared by The Day Today.

If anything I can often hear Steve Coogan's natural 'manc' accent creeping through. Particularly in 'Series 1 - Episode 6' when he gets offered the million pound contract.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Did he have a public school education?

Well.... Alan, being a man desperate to get on in the media, would loose the Norfolk accent and adopt a more popular metropolitan accent in an attempt to appear more media savvy...

perhaps...

No!

Coogan's Manc accent really came out, when Alan was meant to have stood on the spike, in the last series. In fact, he almost sounded like he was doing Pauline Calf's voice.

The character started off - in coogan's head - as a sports reporter, a cross between david coleman and someone else who my ageing, beer soaked brain has forgotten.

He (coogan) had noticed that many sports presenters talk alot of rubbish but with alot of authority, they just ramble on and on meaninglessey(sp?)
