No, I don't mean some cringeworthy combination of 'Fame' and 'Grease', but a sitcom centered in any way around a band or orchestra.
Are the Rutles and Spinal Tap the closest approach?

Rock Follies...?
Comedy/Drama/musical...

Kombat Opera, last year sometime on BBC2. They spoofed a show per episode (Jerry Springer, Newsnight, something else). I think it was created by Stewart Lee and somebody else (the guys who came up with Jerry Springer: The Opera))
It was alright from what I saw but found it difficult to get in to.
On the radio, there have been about five or six series of 15-minute Musical too.

Not much comedy really though.
Fame the series?
Beat me to it, but most definitely yes.
There were a few music-based "comedies" on CBBC in the mid 90s. Nothing's springing to mind as a standard, adult or family sitcom.

The TV version does. Good suggestion - I think this fits the question perfectly.
It's definitely the only one I can think of.
The Muppet show was always quite sitcomesque
I like the idea of a sitcom about some Philharmonic orchestra musicians.
There's a few sitcoms been made with elements of a band in them. Off the top of my head: last year's The Eejits is one example.
As for actual musical sitcoms: Two Pints has done a musical episode, as has Scrubs.
Ooh. No idea. I want one on telly dammit!
There was Adam Buxton's mini series about a band too.
The radio one had Phil Cornwell in it but I can't remember the title...

The Pits... I just remembered.... and it was... the pits that is... it was crap...

"The Partridge Family"...?
Or did you want to limit this to British TV?
