Deaf and Dumb

Undecided about this one. It cuts back and forth continuously between two locations and makes for a tough read I think. Might be considered a mite mean spirited too. Anyway, now I've set you up for a thrilling read, let me know what you think...

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE - NIGHT

RATTLING AWAY AT HIS KEYBOARD, AN OPERATOR TRANSCRIBES THE NEWS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED.

INT. HOME – CONTINUOUS

A DEAF MAN WATCHES THE TV WITHOUT SOUND. ON SCREEN, A NEWSREADER TALKS WITH SUBTITLES.

NEWSREADER:
(SUBS) The European Union is on the verge of a ban that could help end the Canadian seal hunt…

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

A CLEANER HOVES BY WITH A VACUUM. THE OPERATOR CARRIES ON TYPING, CLEARLY DISTRACTED. THE CLEANER RAMS THE OPERATOR’S CHAIR WITH THE HOOVER, NUDGING HIM AND CAUSING HIM TO MISS A COUPLE OF KEYSTROKES:

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

NEWSREADER:
(SUBS) An event that causes wodespreed controbercy…

THE DEAF MAN LOOKS PUZZLED.

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

THE OPERATOR SHOOTS THE CLEANER A LOOK. THE CLEANER WIPES HIS MONITOR DOWN WITH A RAG, OBSCURING THE SCREEN. THE OPERATOR ATTEMPTS TO WORK AROUND HIM.

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

NEWSREADER:
(SUBS) TeH GoAt gOd MenDing0 cAmanDs u* !!!!!!!1!

THE DEAF MAN’S EYES BULGE.

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

THE CLEANER WHISTLES TUNELESSLY INTO THE OPERATOR’S EAR AS HE TRIES VAINLY TO DO HIS JOB.

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

STARING AT THE TV, THE DEAF MAN SMACKS HIMSELF REPEATEDLY IN THE FOREHEAD WITH A HARDBACK COPY OF THE DAVINCI CODE.

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

TO THE OPERATOR’S DISMAY, THE CLEANER RUNS A CLOTH ROUGHLY OVER HIS KEYBOARD.

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS, THE DEAF MAN FUCKS A TIN OF DOG FOOD.

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

SMEARED WITH GRIME, THE OPERATOR’S SCREEN IS IMPOSSIBLE TO READ. THE CLEANER PAUSES TO SWIG FROM A CAN OF POP AND THE OPERATOR RECOILS FROM HIS EXPOSED ARMPIT. HE STRUGGLES TO KEEP ON TYPING REGARDLESS.

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

THE DEAF MAN SWALLOWS A FISTFUL OF DRAWING PINS.

INT. CLOSED CAPTIONING OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

THE CLEANER DROPS HIS CAN, SPILLING DRINK INTO THE OPERATOR’S KEYBOARD.

INT. HOME - CONTINUOUS

THE DEAF MAN HURLS HIMSELF OUT OF A WINDOW.

Why? Not trying to be facetious but why would he do it. Its only a subtitle.

Sorry this one feels a bit hard on the deaf guy. Subtitles not matching with what is said could work, but need to be a closer match.

I like the concept of this, but think the above poster was right when they questioned whether the man would jump out the window.

I'm with the others. Now as you know I'm not above using disability in a gag but this doesn't work.

Perhaps if the messages to him where different...
"Is that a noise upstairs?"
"I thought Pete was out."
"that was footsteps..."
"There's definitely someone in the bed room..."

Yeah, I was definitely reaching with this one. I guess for it to work he has to be deaf and crazy. How to illustrate that though?

Doesn't have to be deaf, I often use subtitles, have him reading books.
Puts Da Vinnci Code volumey 338, Secrets of the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies, onto a pile of books that is actually taller than him. Pan around the room, and we can see either Beautiful mind style collage, or endless notes and cut ala Fox Mulders office.

Or just have him reading the Daily Mail.

The idea of the scrambled captions is fine, but this particular sketch doesn't work for me.

How about TV showing the Queen on parade, with absurd captions to a fervent Royalist.

Or the guy is reading a Mills and Boon, and typing, and keeps getting distracted so types what he was reading.

Gordon Brown to Dave Cameron,

"You firey filly, I'll break your haughty pride,"

Some great ideas here. I'll return to the idea and put it right soon.

Sorry David I'm stealing my last suggestion, it's a skit I want to do!

Don't worry, like mummy taught me, I never go near politicians.

ignore this. My comment. This one right here. Ignore it. It's a long story.

Does it involve nonprescription drugs perchance...?

Yeah... agree with others. Needs a reworking. Good idea but it kind of mushroomed out and seemed a bit harsh towards the deaf person in question.
