Up Pompeii! Page 2

Bumpity bump, bumpity bump!

I've been promising myself a rerun of these since I bought 'The Complete Frankie Howerd' box set so tonight I watched the first two episodes.

Just as good as they ever were and could be screened today with no dating!

As ever Frankie's interplay with the audience is superb and all the characters are totally over the top!

Series One series written by Talbot Rothwell whose comedy hero was, apparently, Max Miller so good pedigree there!

I look forward to the rest of the series over the next few nights.

:D

Talbot's first series is almost unrivalled in hilarity. The second series, co-written with Sid Colin if memory serves, was still very funny but comparitively not as naturally hilarious.

Don't foget that the 1991 Further Up Pompeii special is due out in a few months as part of Netowrk's new Frankie Howerd At ITV box set.

I would love to watch this, but it's not on DVD yet. Does anyone know how many episodes were made and if it's being released?

Secondly, Frankie Howerd starred in a film called The House In Nightmare Park, 1973 I believe. There are clips on YouTube if you want to check it out. Wasn't sure if anyone else on here had seen it, but also wondered if this was due for a DVD release soon.

It was released nearly 5 years ago!

Including the pilot, 14 episodes were produced over 2 series, as well as 2 specials (so 16 in total): 1975's Further Up Pompeii! and 1991's LWT offering, Further Up Pompeii.

The latter is due to be released in this Network box set at the end of May:

Sadly there's still no sign of Whoops Baghdad.

I have it, and it's not laugh a minute or typical Frankie at all, but still pretty good fun. It was released on VHS some years ago, so you can probably find it on eBay, and at times on Amazon. I think it was scheduled for DVD (good sign) a few years back, but never actually made it to release (bad sign) - bluntly, I've no idea what that could mean for its prospects.
