Sorry if this is an old topic or question...but I've only just found this excellent site...and only just started watching Vicar of Dibley!
We've just gotten to the Easter special when....they kill off Mrs Cropley!!!
Does anyone know why the writers did this? She's a wonderful addition...despite her fish paste pancakes.

All sorts of rumours, from Liz Smith wanting more money; not being too good at learning lines or not getting on with Dawn French. Doubt if we’ll ever really know.
Could have simply been for the ratings.
(Liz Smith has written a very good autobiography...a wonderful actress)
Have seen an interview where Liz Smith says that she thought the show had had its day and thats why she stopped and was killed off.
Had it's day.
It was only like the 2nd series lol.
I always thought Liz Smith just plain didn't want to do any more.
Her revolting recipes cracked me up and her saucy stories from the old days. I love the Easter episode, I'll hafta drag out my Vicar dvds and watch that one.
