That's exactly what I mean. they are very different, but SOME people haven't bothered to take the time to notice that.

At long last, someone (thank-you Aaron) has summed this up perfectly. I hate it when threads such as this (even though this one hasn't really) descend into arty-farty pontificating about the perceived 'cool' artists when all that matters is, as Aaron so rightly says, a good tune and catchy lyrics. Girls Aloud are excellent. Blondie are excellent. Abba are excellent. I couldn't give a toss about the genre of the band, or how hip they are considered to be, as long as I can hum along and will be singing the tune all morning if it's the last one I hear in my car on the way to work.
What I am trying to say is that Blondie have a much wider and universal appeal as they appeal to lovers of all types of music.
I wasn't trying to be pretentious - honest! After all I don't read the NME or the Guardian.
I wasn't suggesting anyone was in this thread - it's possibly the most entertaining version of this particular question I've seen! But I've had the discussion with others in the past who have taken the piss when I've dared to suggest some of the artists mentioned here (i.e. Abba, Girls Aloud, Take That)as the answer.
And another one to throw into the mix - The Bee Gees. Phenomenally gifted song-writers who have given us some of the catchiest ditties in pop history.

Thing is, that DOES describe Take That to an extent. I'm always surprised by the type of people that admit to quite liking them.
Plus the fact that not many people on here have said they like Blondie, so they're not that universal. (Although I don't dislike what I've heard of them.)
But anyway, let's not harp on about the 5 manc twats* any more!

On this forum it seems Venga Boys appeal to the masses, I think it's fair to say Arcade Fire is ranked up there in the best pop groups. If not popular wise then at least technical.
