Pulp, Blur, Cast, The Charlatans, Oasis, Supergrass, The Bluetones, Elastica, Suede, Sleeper, The Lightning Seeds, Ocean Colour Scene, Space - f**king hell, it was awesome. There were also some great individual songs by the likes of My Life Story, The Supernaturals, Kenickie, Shed-7 and The Boo Radleys.

That, added to the presence of slightly more 'out there' bands around at the same time - Mansun, Skunk Anansie, MSP, Radiohead, Garbage, Three Colours Red, Ash (the first album, at least)

All that plus grunge.
I <3 the '90s.

Trying to think of my ultimate mid-90s indie album (much like the old 'Shine' compilations). Not necessarily my favourite 14 songs from the period, but the ones that define the era for me. No more than one song per band:

1) The Charlatans - Weirdo
2) Pulp - Disco 2000
3) Manic Street Preachers - Design For Life
4) Cast - Sandstorm
5) Oasis - She's Electric
6) Mansun - Wide Open Space
7) The Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo
8) Sleeper - Nice Guy Eddie
9) Suede - Trash
10) The Lightning Seeds - Lucky You
11) Elastica - Connection
12) Blur - Girls and Boys
13) The Bluetones - Cut Some Rug
14) Levellers - What a Beautiful Day

I was a teenager in the 90's and spent a lot of time pretending to like Oasis and various other groups I really can't stand. All I wanted was to be able to admit to liking Crowded House without being mocked!

In my car cd player (I haven't yet moved on from CDs) at the moment I have a compilation of Joe Hisachi's scores for Studio Ghibli films.

Aw. I liked Menswear. And all sorts of shit.

Blur were definitely better than Oasis anyway.

I second and third that.

After the late-90s pop lull (endless girl bands, and terrible Europop), there were some good heavier UK albums around the Millenium (King Adora, My Vitriol, early-Muse, Cooper Temple Clause, Idlewild etc.). Also, after the nu metal fad, 2003-2004-ish seemed another good little period for UK guitar music (Kaiser Chiefs, middle-Muse, Franz Ferdinand etc.).

It's been bad since though IMHO. But maybe this is what everyone says after their mid-twenties...

I think there's been good stuff since then - Hot Chip, Django Django, NYPC, The xx (incredible), Mystery Jets ("Radlands" is a brilliant album), Daughter, Band of Skulls, Alt-J, British Sea Power, Foals, The Kills, Swim Deep (good indie pop), Tom Vek, and that's just British bands; while older artists are still delivering some great music (inc. non Brits here) - PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Eels, Jack White, The National, Feist, Mark Lanegan, Tricky, Steve Mason, Sigur Ros, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams. (+ others that haven't sprung to mind immediately.)

If you're unfamiliar/curious about any of the above, I've posted tracks I like by most of the above in the "Listening"/"YouTube video" threads, which should come up if you do a Search here. :)

Crowded House are awesome - and that's NOT just because my partner is a Kiwi.

Going to see Neil Finn in May.
