How do you get into Viz, do tell please, pretty please.

errrrrrr, submitting something funny on the right day at the right time! it took me about 5 submissions before 'break through'. and, having grown up on viz, it still ranks as the best moment i've had as a writer. just submit your absolutely top draw material every month, don't bombard them, and hopefully things will happen. Oh and don't stick 'copyright' on material !

I've had a few letters in Viz but you don't get paid for them. The latest letter I had in was;

"If I was Doctor Who I'd have that Billie Piper bent over the Tardis's console before you could say Jack Robinson. Then I'd use my time-twiddling powers to repeat my vinegar strokes, keeping me in a state of eternally-looped space-time ecstasy. Do any of your other readers waste their valuable time by dreaming up frankly unlikely sexual scenarios between Timelords and their beaver-faced sidekicks?"

My first writing cheque was from Hale and Pace in 1995 for £600 but I cashed it and spent it on a new washing machine and cooker because I was a big fat doley.

How old were you then?

Congratulations Tuumble on what should be the first of many cheques that won't bounce.

Which Hale and Pace Sketch was it? How did you get in touch with them?

And why is every one on this site so much more succesful than me?

I was about 24.

I remember that letter, Perry! In fact I was so struck by the description of Billie Piper as "beaver-faced" that I nicked it and used it a year or so later in a NewsRevue song about her crappy hooker TV show. I probably owe you (works out what fraction of the total word count "beaver-faced" comprises and multiplies by NewsRevue payment) ... about 7p or something.

I'll PM you my address soyou can mail the cheque.

It was a few sketches Sooty, some for the regular John and Yokel characters, Jed and Dave the stoned rockers and the drowning puppies in a toilet sketch I think.

I believe I got in touch with them by watching the credits and getting the name of the Script Editor, then calling London Weekend and asking to speak to him.

£11.26 from NewsRevue - my first earnings as a writer...

...unless you include the £125 I got for a greetings card caption that didn't even go into full production.

Fantastic. Best I've had so far is a complimentary copy of the magazine that my work was printed in.

you should never have split up with Sweep

Laughing out loud

Sweep mofo was balling Sue behind my back. He didn't squeak before I dealt with him.

And as for that wand, if the piece of crap wants to do magic, now he has to waggle his ass.

I heard tell that Sooty's big thing was magic but now I realise that it was Sweeps.

My big thing was 6 foot tall, had a beard, and spoke like a t**t. Yes Mr Mathew was my freakish malfourmed talking winkle, so now you know.

Well done Tuumble, I got my first cheque from NR last month too.

Which reminds me, I must cash it! Still haven't been paid for other sketches I did though, must chase them up.

Does anyone keep all the running orders? Can't rember when my sketch ran? lol.

Again \o/ well done!

I've got most of the running orders for the last year or so. If you tell me the name of the sketches and your name, I can check.

Cheers matey!

It was either October/November and the first sketch was called "Cliff's Rehab" I think? by A.Pitts/L.Amott and the second sketch was called "Call Me Tony" by L. Amott.

Thank you.

:)

I don't know what other success you have had but I see you have got stuff on to Newsrevue. That's a step in the right direction as it means you can write material that is considered funny enough for the paying public. It means you've got something.

When I joined this site there were very few success stories but now there are more all the time and its great that this site has helped people discover opportunities and support to get them on the ladder.
