I think the problem here may lie with the school that sees this sketch as an accurate portrayal of the real world or the one that thinks distorting the real world for comedic effect is allowable. Both are right and a writer can flit between the two as and when they want but here I suspect the difference is between the perception of the writer and parts of the readership.
There's no problem with the gag, Ray, and although I haven't seen it, I can guess the sketch through the comments, and thought the idea funny. It's just that some read it as literal reality and therefore flawed whereas others read it as comedy that doesn't always have to obey real world laws all the time and they appreciated the basic gag.
PS the fireworks idea might make the joke acceptable to both camps ... MIGHT being the operative word on this forum.
