Just wondering if anyone is at all familiar with the comedy output of my homeland's premiere(and only) broadcasting network ? let me tell you, if you you feel frustrated by the bbc/c4/itv's more questionable shows, rejoice that you dont have to witness the horror that is RTE's recent scheduling... a few months ago we had 'the english class', think 'mind your language' shot like the office containing a scene where our main character made a kicking motion while saying 'back of the net!' utterly horrific, and thats the tip of the iceberg, we also had 'the roaring twenties' (like a half hour you tube sketch written by first year media students, actually it may well have been) and the less said about 'upwardly mobile', the better... then there was 'bacholors walk' a while back, a really good comedy drama that was cancelled after 3 series due to internal RTE sniping... Its deeply upsetting that this is the state of affairs in the part of the world that gave us Linehan/Matthews/Moran/O'Hanlon etc. and is also host to an incredibly vibrant stand up circuit... ive annoyed myself now, im going to bed...... death to RTE!
I know its the BRITISH sitcom forum but...
If you think it will improve the quality of your shows you're more than welcome to have O'Hanlon back.
Oh yes!
Fair point (bad example), though the english class makes my hero look like fawlty towers....
Moving this one to the Foreign forum.
(It does indeed sound truly awful though.)
What about those two puppets. Like Zig and Zag but grubbier. They were on the telly all the time when I was over there.
Rodge and Podge (had to Google it) - they're quite big, aren't they?
got to love the D'Unbelievables - Jon Kenny and Pat Short. they're brilliant!
Ah yes, and its 'podge an rodge' ill think you'll find! rather disturbing that our greatest tv celebrities are for the most part, puppets; podge&rodge/zig&zag/dustin (come eurovision, you'll know all about him) and talking about puppets, ill say nothing of pat kenny (€730,000 a year apparently, jesus..) D'unbelieveables never did it for me, though pat short's performance in recent indie movie 'the garage' is actually quite amazing.... it is indeed a horrific state of affairs, but on the other hand (hopefully) its a network just waiting for a genuinely good script to come their way and someone who knows what to do with it....
I think its great that the Republic of Ireland's Eurovision entry is a puppet. Sure, they have won it loads already. I did like that comedy film 'Man about dog' as well. I think it was set in both Belfast and Dublin. Of course 'Father Ted' came from the Emerald Isle, need I say anything more.
The one thing that all parts of Ireland has is its sense of humour. Quaint, daft, witty. It just has a quirkiness about it and a relaxed atmosphere. Obviously, the fact that Ireland is full of mad bastards pissed on Guinness helps too.

Just looked 'em up, Jeez that was seriously unfunny,
They sounded like they were doing bad impressions of themselves, and wheres the joke I ask you?
I'd be hung from a lamp post if I tried similar material over there.
But then I am Ian Paisley.
Hi Ian.
