I have, but then I'm odd.
A quick question
I think it's fairly well known. Go for it, I'd say. I think most people would recognise the tune even if they don't know the title or artists.
This is a problem I thought about. I use a guitar sometimes in my stand-up and I re-wrote it about modern day Salford and Ancoats, in 2005.
It went something like:
He painted lots of tanning shops and asbo teens in hoody tops, out happy slapping where I used to play.
etc, etc...
It was funny, even if I do say so myself. But I only ever performed it once, because I felt a that anyone under 30 just didn't get it properly.
Also - and forgive me I'm not suggesting you don't know this, it's just that it seems an opportune time to mention it - there's an inherent problem with song parodies which take and existing tune and change the words. Not only are they frowned upon as lazy comedy but they are even less likely to get broadcast because you would need to pay royalties and, I believe, seek the artists permission.
sorry I've gone on a bit there.
Never heard of it. Sorry.
I have and it was total bollocks. I'm sure someone has already spoofed it but may be understood by some old gits.
I know the title. That's about it, sorry.
It was an awful droney song, but was popular so go for it! I've certainly heard of it.
It's also very funny, and ripe for mockery.

I know it well. It had a brass band backing if I remember rightly. It does drone on a bit but that doesn't mean it can't be livened up. Go for it. What have you got to lose?
Quote: Griff @ February 20, 2008, 8:55 AMMostly I'm looking for a very "Northern" song to do something about the Northern Rock fiasco.
Is there a song about eating coal i't'factory? If so, I'd go with that.
Quote: Griff @ February 19, 2008, 11:56 PMIf I said I was going to write a spoof of the song Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs for NewsRevue, how many of you have ever heard of the original ?
(Or am I showing my middle-aged credentials again ?) The original is horrendously sickly and sentimental, featuring not only two cheesy folk singers, corny key changes and a brass band but also The St. Winifred's School Choir.
I've heard it We learnt it at school for some, strange reason, about 6 years ago.
Yeah i know it well. Ralph McTell I think. I liked his "Tickle On The Tum" better. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2A7GPwligFQ
What an old c**t I am.
It was played in an episode of I'm Alan Partridge...series 1, I think. It's extremely easy to write a parody of, I wrote one for a mates birthday to that tune because he loves that song.
Really it was a typical "Northern" thing. Flat caps and ferrets.
It was all about Lowry wasn't it? Wonderful art!
