Gervais - at it again

Had the misfortune to see Gervais being interviewed at the Baftas last night.

When asked what it was like to win one, big Rick made a gesture indicating their size and said: "What are they like - about that. I've got seven'. :(

He then went on to mention how he spends a lot of time in America and although we call the Baftas the 'British Oscars' the yanks don't call the Oscars the 'American Baftas'. Nice. Imagine him at a cristening: "What a lovely baby - although obviously not as lovely as a baby I saw at a cristening in Milwaukee..."

Finally when asked if there was anyone he wanted to meet at the ceremony, he said there might be a few people he would 'put in something'.

As ever,

What a c**t!

I think the arrogance is all an act... or at least it used to be, perhaps he really is starting to believe he's that great now?

I admire his honesty. He's only saying what he, or anyone else in his position is/would be thinking. I personally love seeing him win all these awards, because it gives me hope that I might one day be able to have some similar success.

He's now coming across as the school idiot sitting at the back of the class crying out for attention. Perhaps it's just a question of where reality begins and where it ends and I wish someone would point out to the little fat fool that there is a difference between Gervais and David Brent. Or maybe, as I truly believe, there is NO difference and he was lucky to be able to stretch a very limited amount of talent a very, very long way.

was there ever a difference? 11 o'clock show, meet ricky gervais, his C4 david bowie thing ..... David Brent in all of them. The Office was the perfect format for that. Extras is funny but the gag is the celebs and steven merchant. Andy Millman isnt a very funny charcter unless he's kicking dwarfs or laughing at disabled people, hardly a long way from Brent.

I'd love to see a writers meet between the two of them, i wonder how much of the comedy comes from merchant writting for gervais's character?

I can't believe people still fall hook-line-and-sinker for these interviews. What next Sacha Baron Cohen is really from Kazakhstan?

He said in an interview recently that he's amazed people believe he's really like that and if he was he would never work with the great actors and directors he does.

But it's so f**king boring. He's been doing the same act since whenever The Office started. If it's not the actual, real him, then why is there no change? Seems that there's only one other possibility - he can't come up with anything else. A true one trick pony. I've said it right from the start of Extras that Milman is essentially a slightly toned-down Brent. If he's really not that much of an arrogant c**t, why doesn't he show it more? Whatever one thinks of The Office, his whole persona is just boring now. He's either really like that, or so one-dimentional that he should be in McDonald's, not Hollywood.

If he doesn't know when to come away from playing a buffoon then don't look to others to show a lead. Does he really think that is what everyone wants to see and when they express strong opinion against his purile attitude for sussing the man out only to be attacked for 'not getting the joke'.

I've never seen a Gervais interview where he's not coming across as an arrogant bell end. I'd love to meet him one day and be able to say "Yeah I met him, he's actually a really nice guy". Unfortunatly though my instincts tell me that he really is somewhat of a male reproductive glans.

It's not an act in anyway. He's not a nasty bolke but he has a huge ego/attitude that spent 35 years being suppressed because he was a nobody....now its loose!

The whole "american baftas" thing isnt a character, its not brent, none of his creations act like that...its really him, maybe he winds it on for the cameras but its still him.

The jealous thing is a bit lame, good luck to the bloke i say.....as a 34 year old from Reading i would love to follow in his path. But i can still think he acts a bit of a knob.

Interestingly, the reason i like the US Office more than ours is because Steve Carrell is just a much nice bloke. I couldn't handle 4 seasons of Brent!

Take any "awful" sitcom from the 70s (for example), select a character at random, and I bet that they have more depth than Ricky Gervais's persona. Even Two Pints has a wider range.

Yeah, but if you say 'I'm only saying this for a laugh, but pakis smell', you still cause offence.

Celebs actually go on media training courses to learn how to not slag off their peers. It's the one thing you don't do, and why you seldom (speaking relatively) hear one actor/writer etc, saying how shite another one is. It's not because they don't feel it, it's because it's not done.

Similarly, you don't go to the Baftas and slag it off for being inferior to the Oscars. Gervais is on his own in doiing this and it's embarrassing.

Good point. He's still presenting that persona to the public, giving others a bad name or at very least making people think twice about them, so what is said in private or is 'really' his attitude is pretty irrelevant.
