What are your thoughts about naming characters in short sketches MAN 1, WOMAN 2, or something similar along those lines, instead of giving them proper names such as James or Sarah?
Character names in short sketches
I prefer names. Even something completely generic.
MAN 1, MAN 2 etc is just too distracting, and sometimes confusing, for me.
Of course, if you wanted a character to remeain genderless, that would be difficult, unless you chose a genderless name I suppose.
I don't think its that important, I always use MAN 1, WOMAN 2 or PERSON 1 and have got stuff in. I made the mistake at the begining of allocating names and getting the characters to introduce themselves, which had no bearing on the sketch and wasn't necessary.
It's not important, call them Vagina and Cocknose if you feel the urge, but Zooo has a point, good to give them some sort of Identity.
Doesn't the old adage apply? If it matters, give 'em names, if not, don't.
Sometimes a name can say something about a person, but even then it might not be necessary - e.g. is TARQUIN better than POSH MAN?
Sometimes if sketch characters are given names the reader looks for importance in the name that isn't there and it can be distracting. But other times it can make things more readable - e.g. MAN 1, MAN 2 and MAN 3 can be a bit more confusing than TOM, DICK and HARRY.
[Note to self: check back on all those sketches with unnecessary character names.]

Yep, I think so!
i'd try and give them names which are applicable. e.g. if the sketch is about an old lady, give her an old lady's name. or if it is about a businessman call him alan. or mike.
I dont think it really matters TBH!
