:P

Question: If my first submission (or even first few) was utter crap and I now realise this, does anyone know if this is likely to subsequently affect whether or not later submission even get read?

I can't help but think that with so many submissions flooding in, I'd be tempted to add the really poor writers to the 'block' list.

Is this why I'm not getting the Running Order!?

They read all submissions. A few times I've sent in 10-20 sketches and they use a sketch I've attached in the middle or at the end of the email so they must read all the sketches. And people tend to get better with each submission so it would be foolish to judge someone from what they've done in the past. And I don't get the running order but they still send me cheques out so not getting the running order doesn't mean anything - I don't think

Thank you. I understand completely why they can't give feedback, but sending your stuff into a black hole makes it very difficult to learn!

No the genius thing is the director and cast change every 6 weeks.

So some months you'll get a wonderful sick bastard who loves sketches about Cameron raping Thatcher with a salami.

The next month it might be some greedy writing the whole show themselves.

There's less competition and less need for refinement then any other show.

So just poor that shit out.

I've had sketches turn up 4 months after submission.

Maybe post some stuff on critique. I've had some great advice from posting rejects on that thread

Main thing about NR is have some fun.

It's not half as tough as NJ just have fun. Thing of a semi decent idea, stick in some one liners and have fun.

And don't forget it's not the "best" sketches that get on. But the sketches that fill the holes in their running order (come on sootyj give us your best innuendo here...). For example they may need to cover a certain story or they may need a female two hander (and here...).

Or you may send a brilliant sketch but they have already rehearsed another one about the topic and don't want two.

And lots of other reasons.

Basically to get on a sketch has to be funny. But lots of funny sketches might not get on.

So write lots and aim to get the average up over time, don't sweat it over them "rejecting" your sketch. It's not "rejecting" they just didn't want to use it.

And always try to make the next sketch funnier than the last one (or in sootyj's case, sicker than the last one Sick :D)

Any new running orders?

Bloody hell - didn't know I was in the Edinburgh run 'til the cheque just turned up. So they are tracking payments.

Right then - back to submissions.

Lucky you. I'm still owed for stuff I wrote before Easter.

Probably best to chase that up some more. I had too once. They'd missed me but sorted it once they knew.

It was good to see a few of the BCG crowd at the New Revuw writers meeting on Sunday night.

BTW I have added a brief description of the News Revue to my new blog (the website is still a bit rough around the edges, you have been warned). It might be useful to those who haven't seen News Revue.

Cool blog post, David. :)

I hardly get much time these days to submit to NR, but it was great seeing my work performed by them when I was starting out.
