Animated Sitcom

I started thinking the other day, what are the pros and cons of venturing into ideas for an animated sitcom. With animation I think certain bounderies are removed, for example, visual comedy which may be somewhat unrealistic or unachievable in real world filming is achievable and often excusable in animation simply because of the differen medium.

Anyone have any thoughts on this generally?

Con, the Simpsons have done everything already.

not really though

Pro - As you say, there's that extra aspect of being able to do something a little more removed from reality (Family Guy is a PERFECT example of this). However, we do have CGI nowadays, although expensive...

Con - More susceptible to be dismissed as a children's programme. I can't count the number of times I've heard some twat or other calling The Simpsons a children's programme.

Can see what you are saying Aaron, but I can't think that anyone above ignorant would dismiss any cartoon as a children's programme. I think it would depend upon the time slot.
This reminds me of a cartoon which used to be on cartoon network called 'Home Movies'. I found it hilarious simply because of the style of language, it sounded very natural and colloquial rather than scripted. I'd love to find it again.

Does anyone know the practicalities and processes of getting an animated programme started as a writer? I'm sure there would be a slightly different route to take.

I'm not really sure but I read somewhere that you can get paid like £15 a second if its aired... which is nice

£15 a second was on the BBC new animators competition I think.

I doubt this is the only way to do it but there's supposedly a big event every year called the Cartoon forum. Where you get like 30 seconds to show a trailer to an audience of investors. And then cross your fingers some are interested enough to find out more.

If you just have a script then I dont see why it would be different to a standard sitcom.

Johnny Bravo is ace! (unrelated to tpoic but it is cool)
