Writing for Newsrevue

On January 7th, I sent an email to Newsrevue informing them that I would like to write for the show. Then on January 8th, I received a reply containing information about writing for them, and later that day I submitted my first material.

However, five days have now passed, and I haven't heard anything from Newsrevue since then.

Is this standard, or should I be concerned?

I wrote for News Revue for quite a while a couple of years back, and from what I remember they, at the time, didnt really do one on one replies in general; if you get something in a show you found out when you scanned down the list of sketches used in a show that they e-mail out every few weeks. So, unless you go to the meetings and stuff, I think you generally found out after theyd already performed the shows.

The 'Treason Show' on the other hand, were much more forthcoming with e-mails and material opinions.

You don't get replies although I'm on their mailing list and they post you that week's show listing all the sketches to be shown.

Had one performed once, 3 times a week for 4 weeks and got paid £13. I've decided just to frame the cheque.

Yeah every week you receive a "running order" which is an excel document listing all the sketches used that week.

I've had two sketches performed, one for one week and another for a month which was also featured on their xmas run.

Haven't received any cheques yet though. :(

Leevil email them that you want your dosh. If Chapman got £13 you must be worth atleast a million.

Can I just say here that both NewsRevue AND Treason Show are a really nice bunch of people

Yes they are, but I always found Treason friendlier, and likely to e-mail you individually with thoughts and ideas. Thats not to say News Revue arent friendly, just that, in my experience, they operate in a different manner; though they do put on several shows a week, wheras Treason do it just over one weekend a month, so Revue are probably busier and so not as able to chat back and forth. But its good to get involved in both, as they will both use the same material; so you could get two sets of cash for the same sketch!

Having said all that, probably due to some computer error, i was never paid anywhere near the amount that I was owed by News Revue, I wrote for them for almost a year and they used a great deal of my material,I was used almost every week, but I only ever recieved one cheque-and that was for about six pounds!!
I never chased it up because I wasnt bothered about the money, it was just good experience to write regularly for a professional show. I never cashed the cheque.

But yeah, its good to get involved in the writing of both shows, a good exercise to get you writing regularly and to build confidence in your own abilities.

I didn't expect a lot but I thought it would be more than that.

Anyway - it's all good for the CV and I still send stuff when I get some topical ideas. Be good to know it wasn't just a flash in the pan.

Oooh what's this then? What sort of stuff do they want...tell me more :P

I had some stuff performed by NR last year. Finally got paid just before Christmas. They never give feedback unless they want a re-write and it's easier to get your stuff in with some directors than others. I would recommend that if you get anything performed that at some point you go up to a writers meeting which occasionally happens. Don't go up if you've had nothing performed because they won't know who the hell you are. Some people did that and when they introduced themselves it was like a scene from the office. Keep it topical and if your good with songs you'll earn more money.

I have a similar question about The Treason Show:

On January 6th, I submitted my first material to them, and almost instantly I received this message:

The Treason Productions office will be closed from the 3rd Jan - 13th
Jan.
For Treason Production enquiries please e-mail Daniel Flexer
(Co-Producer) daniel@treasonshow.co.uk
for Treason Show admin carol@treasonshow.co.uk

Happy New Year!

It is now the 16th January, and I've heard nothing since. Should I be concerned?

I would recommend that if you get anything performed that at some point you go up to a writers meeting which occasionally happens. Don't go up if you've had nothing performed.....

Because of the way News Revue is structured it really is a good idea to get along to the Canal Cafe, whether or not you've got anything in the running order, to see the show. The performing area is no bigger than a postage stamp - OK, it is bigger than a postage stamp - but nevertheless, it's not a huge space. That way you'll be able to take into account the way you structure your scripts for 4 performers and a piano.

Don’t worry if you find it a bit, well, clicky because that’s exactly what it is in exactly the same way any other place is where you are the newbee. You also get to sit with other writers and if you’ve never been in that kind of an environment before, then you’ll find that an experience in itself.

Money has always been an issue at News Revue but you do get the money - eventually. OK, it comes by snailmail but it does arrive – eventually (have I already said that). Writers meetings are a hit and miss affair but they are, nevertheless, well worthwhile going along to if, for no other reason, than you get to meet other writers and sometimes - sharp intake of breath here - some legends of News Revue like John Random and Terry Franks Newman who have actually made it.

Treason on the other hand do have regular writers meetings which actually help with the writing process. Even if you contribute nothing on the night (highly unlikely) but instead just keep making notes of what’s being talked about around the table, then that ends up being a great sauce of inspiration.

Finally, and this is the important bit, If you have any questions including any money related issue, then ask. It’s a radical approach but it does actually work because just like any other work related situation, don't wait for somebody to come to you because it jut ain't gonna happen.

A few days ago i confirmed my interest in writing for newsrevue. They replied by telling me where I have to send my sketches to and also told me that I am on there writers database. Basically, all I want to know is, how will i know if they have used one of my sketches? Will they send me an e-mail with the sketches they have used that week?
Any information will be highly appreciated, Thanks.

Well,I'm told that if you join the mailing list then you should get sent a running order each week of the show.

I only signed up a few days ago, so we'll have to wait and see....

Thanks Winterlight, can you tell me where i join the mailing list?
