Trekkie sketch Page 2

Good stuff James and you managed to keep your clothes on this time. ;)

This is a critique I got from a friend.
To what extent do people agree with this?
It wasn't really meant as a Star Trek 'spoof' with the age-old theatrically rocking to-and-fro gags so I think he might have the wrong end of the stick: ...

Re; the new video, perhaps it should be called Warp Factor 6...

OK, criticisms: Ro stole the show again because she plays it straight whereas the other actor tends to ham it up slightly too much. For my money it needed a few more commands to the crew at the start in character as Kirk/Spock, along with shaking from explosions ("Hard a-port, Mr Sulu, warp factor 6..."), and a few props (a bunch of crystals labelled dilithium). Plus the gun gag at the end might have worked better as a phaser (some kind of remote) aimed at Ro, while Kirk/Spock mutters into his other wrist communicator something along the lines of "I have captured an alien life force Mr Scott. Beam us up..." with Ro shaking her head.

Other than that, it was great!

Well done James. Watched the link before reading the sketch and glad I did. It was really well acted by both parts, and it made me laugh. The line "It’s just hanging out with my mates. In deep space" was really well timed. Keep it up, and Ro did look hot! ;)

And she DID say conventions!

Thanks! Mis-timed the "Belay that order" line though - too quick. Not 100% happy with it by any means. Focus is off too. There comes a point where you just have to go to sleep instead of re-shoot!

This was excellent and I don't think the gf will be crying over comments this time 'round. Everything was a step up. Looking forward to more.

:O Someone made her cry I hope you defended her honour James.

I can see what your friend meant about the gun. Maybe have a remote and say something like 'lucky i had it set to James Blunt' or something like that and press play as you're saying it. But I think its fine how it is.

Hate to be the naysayer, James, but I don't think you did this sketch justice.

The script I like very much - I've said so before. It's the performance I have issues with. Your mate had it spot on - you'd have been better off playing it straight. I can see what you were going for with a more energetic take but I'm afraid the performance comes across as 'wacky'. And Christ knows you don't want that.

Like you say, the timing is off in places. A couple of jokes are fumbled but the main problem is the pacing. The whole thing would benefit with being stepped up a gear. It fair crawls as is. Make the banter snappier and you'll have yourself a vastly improved sketch. Also, you need to decide who it is you're talking to. Your eye line wanders back and forth between the camera to the computer and the effect is somewhat confusing.

I hope I haven't bummed you out too much, James. I know it stings when someone leaves a comment like this but I really do mean for the best. I'm sure it wouldn't be a stretch for you to have another go at filming this one. You've already proved you can perform in front of the camera, I just think you made a poor performance decision this time around. Treat last night's effort as a first draft and go for take two. It's a good sketch and I know you can do a better job.

I enjoyed this sketch. I have not checked out the YouTube version but I will take a gander at it.

oooh i noticed that too.... was slightly confuzzled!

OK, interesting.
I might have a go at reshooting it in a different style at some point.

Ro said to me: "You are a lot like that though".
I think I might be "wacky". :O

Btw are people under the impression that I was holding up a toy gun or phaser? It was Ro's bikini trimmer, I thought that would be funny. Thought about saying it was set to trim or something, but thought the 'set to kill' line more daft.

In an earlier shooting of the sketch (which some people may prefer) I actually switched it on, but then in my head Ro would have actually been killed, if you see what I mean.

Nice sketch, James - and proof for me that you can never truly grasp the final product of a sketch by reading the script alone. I read the script first and thought it was ok. Then I watched the vid and thought it was great. It's a bummer for those of us who don't have the means to produce a video :(

Anyway...
As for Ro, in a few places I thought her acting was a little Jessica Stevenson-esque - that may be taken as a compliment or an insult depending on your viewpoint. But I would tend to go strongly with the former.

Great job, mate, look forward to seeing more.
