And it's a shame that you hold historical dramas or adaptations of classic novels in such contempt, but fortunately not everyone does, which is why the BBC still makes them.

Day of the Triffids was yet another remake and though they tried to give it a more modern twist, it still came across as a bit cack handed and predictable.

I only hold historical dramas in contempt when it's just the same old tired re-tread we've seen a million times before - orphans and corsets mainly. I did, however, enjoy the recent series Rome - but that might have been because it was done in a different way and had some HBO influence.

Nothing would make me happier then to do my own sci-fi series, which is my eventual goal. I first need to build myself up to the point where I can actually get an agent, never mind critical success.

I put Firefly to you sir! And A Town called Eureka! And the first series of Heroes.

Also the Last Train was a good bit of grown up scifi as was Red dwarf.

Yeah, but that's a couple. I liked Firefly, not keen on the episodes of Dollhouse I've seen. Including both, it's still only a veeeeery small percentage of the sci-fi/fantasy stuff that got pumped out.

Didn't like Eureka, and I still say it's a small amount when you consider the sheer volume of Sci-fi and fantasy shows produced!

I'd say Battlestar, Firefly, first series of Heroes, Lost. I'm sure there's probably been more I've liked, but that's all that springs to mind quickly. Reaper could be ok.

Well, kind of true - they have made a hell of a lot of sci fi shows - much more then UK telly - but I'm a bit of sci-fi geek and loved Firefly, Stargate, Heroes, etc., so maybe my opinion isn't objectively valid.

Those were in the last ten years were they?! When did Buffy end? (I never much cared for it anyway) And Star Trek? Really? For me the last decent (TV) incarnation was Deep Space Nine, and that wasn't in the last ten years, which was the timeframe mentioned!!! Obviously if we're talking ever, then there's been tons of great American Sci-Fi/fantasy shows.

Heroes was only good for the first series, it's been awful since, and I've never liked Stargate. Ugh.

Voyager (later seasons) and Enterprise were pretty good.

Though I do admit Stargate and it's bastard progeny seemed to have squatted Sky1 like a particularly unlovable family of gypos.

I quite enjoyed Journeyman. They only made 13 episodes, but I'm a sucker for time travel. Not sure if they ever showed it in the UK.

Never really liked them. But then I'm not mad on Trek in general. (And who the hell picks the theme tunes for those shows?!) Babylon 5, however, I used to think was awesome.

Kevin McKidd was in it. Quantum Leap, essentially, but less shit.

You really liked Babylon5? There were some good bits but loads of awful bits.

There was an ace show whose name I forgot about this slob who's turned into a superman type thing.

Sure, it was weird, and a bit dark and dirty. Plus I used to watch it when it was shown at about one A.M, and I was slumped on a couch at Uni, drunk. In that state it was definitely brilliant.

It had an odd mix of great actors with truly lamentable scripts.
