Lol
Doctor Who... Page 200
Quote: zooo @ August 26 2008, 12:34 PM BSTThere is some great old stuff. But it's not as good (to me) as the great new stuff. Nowhere near.
I dunno there's been some stinkers, Slitheen, Drs daughter, more bloody Daleks in the 1920s, the Dr as a budgie.
When Dr Who was starved of money it's impressive how it still did City of Death, The War Games, Shaka.
Not to mention proper old school scary Cybermen.
That's why I said the 'great' new stuff.
I mean the best of the old, isn't as good as the best of the new.
The very first cybermen were f**king terrifying. The ones that had a bandage round their head and just opened their mouths and pointed. F**k me.
That must be on youtube somewhere, I've probably remembered it all wrong.
The cybermen themselves may not have been scary, their not appearing for 3 epsiodes was.
You're lucky if the Daleks don't appear for three episodes these days.

n.b. the most noticable thing about the modern cybermen was how comparatively primitve they are. I mean compare a Who cyberman to a fully CGI BSG centurion or those fully CGI races from Enterprise and they look shit.
It's the story and the acting that makes them work.
I mean name me one really standout race from the new series in terms of effects, or scariness .
There isn't one, as ever with Who writing and acting beat poor budgets.

Sure.
That's why I prefer monsters that have faces. They can act more. Unless they're supposed to be robots and not have any emotions of course, then it's okay.
I hate CGI monsters.

I can only speak personally. But I was extremely scared of the weeping angels, and scared of the scarecrows.
And there are more if I think about it.

I know what you mean. But can you imagine how the Beast in The Satan Pit would have looked in the old days?
The marvellous First Doctor story, 'The War Machines' is out on dvd today. A contemporaneous Earth bound story that anticapated the military aspect of the Pertwee era. Quite a cumbersome 'monster', but otherwise, groovy!
Quote: Griff @ August 26 2008, 1:12 PM BSTThey had exactly that in the olden days:
Ah, a bloke in a mask. Brilliant.

Precisley a terriying effect that could be bought from a Whyevale garden centre.
None of the new big budget ones really stand out.
Quote: Marc P @ August 26 2008, 12:37 PM BSTSome of the great old stuff is leagues better than some of the naff new stuff though. Errol Flynn is yet to be bettered as Robin Hood after all.
I quite liked Michael Praed as Robin Hood.
Saw the last part of The Daemons a few months ago. Summed up everything good and bad about Classic Who to me. Good: Third Doctor, The Master, proper menace. Bad: Jo Grant, Master defeated by remote control Bessie, ropy special effects.
Quote: Griff @ August 26 2008, 1:14 PM BSTThe Daemons was superb. So was The Satan Pit, mind you.
Ditto the Sontarans. Bunch of muscle marys the lot of them.
Ok even Pope Benedict and Senator Jessy Helms would be confused by that.

Dissing Jo Grant? Thems fighting words Bandage man.

Oh, sootyj, she's rubbish. Sarah Jane Smith wees all over her.
Actually, she probably did in some fan-fiction. That slash stuff is weird.
