They are given a basic outline of what is going on in the scene, and they act accordingly. They're not aggressively trying to be funny. It's not a contest.

Sorry, but with that haven't you just entirely described Whose Line? THEY'RE given the basic outline to improvise with, and it's not a contest. "The points don't matter. That's right, the points are just like whatever the delivery guy is delivering in a porno".

It's comedians trying to get one over each other. Which is a complete staple of even scripted shows such as The Young Ones for example.

Yes but you're old, so you don't count either.

I think what you meant to say is, he's old, so he can't count.

I think we're all Kent Pete and ironically he's actually the only one who is not.

Laughing out loud Have you seen Whose Line Is It Anyway. I think what you mean is that you like more observational stuff tempered with realism. I don't really think that i'm just drunk and trying to sound clever. I'll revert back to normal in a moment.

Is it just me, or is Adam more lucid and far cleverer when pissed than when sober?

The US version however is really awful. But it did inspire a really funny story on the Mr Show commentaries were David Cross got lost and wandered across onto the WLIIA set while they were filming and everyone was confused because they didn't know what was happening...and then I think Jay Johnstone said.."Did they suddenly have to start improvising?". :D

I saw a taping a number of years back and it was a blast. They improvised about three hours in a row and then took an hour to do the lead in's to the games and shout-outs from the audience (no, they aren't taped at the same time!).

The real problem with the show is that while it is imrpovisation, it's not REALLY made up from out of nowhere as all the suggestions feed into each player's strengths. They will choose a song style that Wayne Brady knows well, for example. It's fine for what it is.

Personally, I come from the ImprovOlympic side of things where we do long-form improv which is much more satisfying to perform, though sometimes much more painful to watch.

Eat my shirts! My God, I don't think I've seen anybody so worked up about improvised comedy since my ex-wife bought me a penis pump. For what it's worth I like Whose Line but it gets dated me thinks.
