Radio Sketch Project

I think this was suggested a while back.

Is anyone interested in it? I would be.

I've written some sketches for radio, I'd be happy to put them forward.

What exactly is it you're proposing, David?

I thought of doing this with a friend last year as we both work/have worked in radio, but not in this particular area. I think it would be a far simpler way to do things than through television, but not necessarily a greater possibility of success come the end of it.

A pilot could be produced very cheaply, some up and coming comedy actors and a studio could be hired for a day or two, and editing it all together afterwards is fine if you know your way around Adobe Audition. The trick is to try and get on to the Register for Independent Production Companies at Radio 4, which we never properly examined but http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/network/index.shtml has some useful information.

A couple of examples, Radio 9 was written and produced by Johnny Daukes who set up his own production company (Furious) while more recently Down The Line was produced by a company setup by Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson (although it's easy for them as they are well established).

There are a lot of companies on that register who when we contacted in the past said they are too small to look at scripts submitted from people outside the company but haven't really made a lot of waves themselves/or are too focused on televsion, so you tend to find that nearly all of the Radio 4 comedies come from the same names (BBC/Pozzitive/Avalon/Celador/Angel Eye and occasionaly Baby Cow and Above The Title)

I think to make it worthwhile it would make sense to work on 2 or 3 differing projects on the go, but this could easily happen if there was enough interest.

I'd deffo be up for it -I can do funny voices, accents etc

Sounds very interesting and as of now I'm interested.

Written some radio nonsense and would indeed be highly interested.

Me too

Shit! That means I've got to do something!

About 18 months ago I started writing several sketches and me and a couple of others submitted it in written form. Writing for radio is different and consequently most of my stuff came out that way - voices, sound effects and imagination.

It would probably be cheapish to produce a tape or CD.

Could be good. I'd give it a go. I suggest we avoid the topical 'cos it's been done to death and go for the more surreal, though I'll go with the flow. Nice idea.

Oh yes - need to avoid topicals as there's not much chance of repeat fees.

Anyone who's interested submit something and we'll see. Obviously it's all in the minds eye and the words are more important than actual images.

Well it's a bloody stupid time of the year to start something like this. Who's idea was it?

Oh yes!

Now that was you :P

I want in. Let me in.
