DERMOT:
The winner of X Factor 2007 is...

LONG PAUSE AS TENSION BUILDS IN THE STUDIO. LOTS OF CUTTING BETWEEN BOTH FINALISTS AND DERMOT. AUDIENCE SHOUTING OUT NAMES.

FADE OUT

Int - TV Studio - Night

FADE IN

SAME SCENE. DERMOT AND FINALISTS ON STAGE. LOTS MORE CUTTING BETWEEN ALL THREE.

Int - TV Studio - Day

FADE IN

DERMOT AND THE TWO FINALISITS ARE STILL ON STAGE BUT THEY ARE NOW ASLEEP IN PUT UP BEDS. STUDIO LIGHTS HAVE BEEN DIMMED DOWN. SHARON, SIMON AND DANI ARE SLUMPED OVER THEIR DESKS. LOUIS HAS HIS HAND UNDER HIS CHIN PROPPING HIS HEAD UP. HIS ELBOW KEEPS SLIPPING OFF AND HE WAKES WITH A JOLT EACH TIME.

FADE OUT

DERMOT AND FINALISTS STILL ON STAGE SITTING AT A BREAKFAST TABLE EATING A FULL ENGLISH.

Ext - Stage Door - Day

THE FINALISTS ARE LEAVING THE STUDIO. DERMOT IS STILL WITH THEM.

DERMOT:
OK guys you'd best shoot off now. We've got your mobiles and I'll give you a shout just as soon as the director allows me to say who the winner is

This is a nice visual gag, but I'm not convinced the punchline is the best it could be. It either needs to take it further or it needs to confound our expectations in some way.

Yes, I agree it needs a different ending. How about..

Two old men answer the door to an old Dermot and then he announces he's pleased to tell them who the winner is?

I did this off the cuff after watching today's results show. I had a different ending the first draft but changed it as I thought I'd seen something similar somewhere else.

FADE OUT:

THE SET LOOKS BADLY RUN DOWN. THERE ARE HOLES IN THE WALLS AND THE SOUND OF THE WHISTLING WIND CAN BE HEARD.

CAMERA PANS 360 AND TAKES IN A VIEW OF DERMOT, THE FINALISTS, THE JUDGES AND THE AUDIENCE. THEY ARE ALL SKELETONS.

END:

That's better - much better in the case of Dermot O'Leary who really is a hypocritical, pretentious little twat.

Probably because he can't get in panto this year.

Ha ha! Love that ending!

The Gareth Gates ending made me laugh, and there's certainly a good joke in the X Factor pause, the first attempt here just didn't end with enough punch... Although I have to say Ant & Dec took the pee out of the results announcement pause in I'm a Celeb.

I watch too much reality TV. :-P
