Maybe you need to think of it like this: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It shows that at some level there are yanks who appreciate British humor and want to share that with the rest of the country. It gets screwed up quite often, but there's no need to be that angry, IMO... The original shows will always be there to be watched and loved.
FATHER TED FILM Page 2
The original will always rule.
"The original will always rule".
Ofcourse it will. How many times have we said on this board, the Americans don't get irony.
When I say Americans I must ofcourse rule out the New York Jews who are the masters of comedy, I'm talking mainstream 99% of America. Can you really imagine them 'getting' Pat Mustard ,Father Fintan Stack or Father Paul Stone.
They'll turn it into a kind of dreadful 'All Gas And Gaiters'.
You can probably tell, I'm not a complete fan of the American wit, NYJ's withstanding.
If Americans don't get irony, why is The Simpsons so good (caveat - choose your own cut-off point for when it went downhill)? There hasn't been a more ironic programme on the telly.
I'm not saying a US remake of Father Ted is a good idea, by the way.
My proviso was, not including New York Jews.
The Simpson's is written, produced and directed by New York Jews.I'm talking about the other 99.9% of America who are as incapable of detecting irony as they are WMD's.
Unfortunately this thread is actually true :
Yeah, but they weren't *all* New York Jews were they?
Yes
Groening, Silverman, very jewish names
Friends, Frazier, Taxi, Seinfeld, Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Soap,
The Odd Couple, Need I go on.
All written, directed, produced, and acted by New York Jews
Add on Woody Allen, Steven Wright,Billy Crystal, Mel Brooks, The Marx Brothers,
The list is endless.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In UK however list is not quite as impressive :
Joan Collins , Helena Bonham Carter, Alfie Bass, Marty Feldman, Sid James,
Daniel Radcliffe, Sacha Baron Cohen, Stephen Fry, Maureen Lipman,
Vanessa Feltz, Sharon Osbourne, Gaby Roslin, Michael Grade,
Mike Leigh, David Baddiel, Ben Elton, Peter Sellers, Bernard Manning [amazingly]
Matt Lucas, Alexei Sayle, Jerry Sadowitz, and I assume Bob Monkhouse.
Still an impressive list. Perhaps I need to go and have the snip. Might make me
funnier.
The notion that the only people who get irony out of a population of 250 million are New York Jews is tosh. And, if I may be so bold, racist tosh. It's like suggesting that the only good atheletes are black, the only good chefs are French, and that everybody in Liverpool is a thief.

Which is blatant bollocks, since they drench everything in garlic.
Quote: chipolata @ November 28, 2007, 9:52 AMand that everybody in Liverpool is a thief.
Well ...

Not according to the notoriously reliable Wikipedia. Interesting list though.
Yeah that "only New York jews get irony" is rubbish. Seinfeld was one of the biggest sitcoms of all time, it had a huge audience and the majority of the audience got the irony and I doubt the audience was completely made up of New York jews.

I am american and I like brit sitcoms a lot. I get irony, innuendo, assumption and misunderstanding. And I'm not a NY jew. An american version of Father Ted will be terrible as was Coupling. Americans redo british shows so americans will understand and relate to them. They have no imagination over here and thats why we remake old movies to appeal to the younger generations. I think it's crap that there is so much garbage on TV and very little quality. Thank god I get 4 channels of PBS and BBC America.
Who do we see to stop this ever happening? It is sure to be grim.

Donovan Bailey, Michael Johnson, Merlene Ottey, Edwin Moses, Asafa Powell,
Jesse Owens, Tessa Sanderson, Fatima Whitbread etc, etc, etc
Sorry is stating the bleeding obvious Racist ???
Great White Athlete's.....Alan Wells

And come to think of it everyone in Liverpool is a thief,
John Miller, Colin McCreedy, Peter Trainor, Steve Pritchard, Davey Brennan, Johnny Hall, Dave Byrne, Spencer Brookes, Victor Haynes, Stuart Gee, Alan Mullins, Peter Jarvis, Mark Robinson, Johnny Murphy, Lee Reed, Mark Higgins, Kenny Dalglish, Lenny Price, Arthur Price, Sally McMananman, Yvonne Edwards, Jonathan Wallis, Greg Townsend, Jack Taylor....Need I go on.............

OK, You might have a point about the Chef's.
FWIW, I agree. However, your use of an apostrophe within "athletes" is killing me.
